Reef safe isn't a throwaway line for us. NOAA has identified oxybenzone and octinoxate as UV filters that can contribute to coral bleaching and reef damage. Neither appears in our formula β we use non-nano zinc oxide only.

A petition currently before the Queensland Parliament asks the State Government to exclude sunscreens containing oxybenzone, homosalate and 4-MBC from its procurement β meaning the sunscreen supplied to state schools, government departments, outdoor workers and State-funded projects.
Queensland wouldn't be first. Hawaii has prohibited the sale and distribution of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. Thailand prohibits several UV filters, oxybenzone among them, inside its marine national parks. A number of protected marine areas and ecotourism parks in Mexico permit only mineral or approved alternatives.
As the home of the Great Barrier Reef and host of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Queensland is well placed to show the same leadership.
To be clear about what this petition is not: it is not asking anyone to stop using sunscreen. Sun protection remains essential β protective clothing, shade, and a broad spectrum sunscreen applied properly and reapplied often.
Reef Safe Australia is a mineral zinc sunscreen, SPF 50, broad spectrum, and chemical UV filter free.

Hawaii banned it to save their reef. The Queensland Government can still buy it.
Sunscreens containing oxybenzone have been banned or restricted in Hawaii, Palau and the U.S. Virgin Islands as part of measures to protect coral reefs.
Queensland sits alongside the largest reef system on the planet β and oxybenzone sunscreens can still be bought through government procurement.
Zinc oxide alternatives already exist, and they're manufactured right here in Australia.
A Queensland Parliament e-petition is now open asking the Queensland Government to stop purchasing sunscreens containing oxybenzone. It takes about a minute to sign.

Tested every single batch. Not a sample here and there β every single production run.
Since 2021 we've been making mineral zinc sunscreen in a Brisbane workshop, and the rule hasn't shifted: nothing leaves unless it's been independently SPF tested.
What sits behind that stamp:
βοΈ Independently SPF tested every production run
βοΈ Zinc made here in Australia using 100% solar power
βοΈ Every tube removes its weight in plastic
βοΈ 25% non-nano zinc oxide as the only UV filter β chemical UV filter free
βοΈ Broad spectrum SPF 50, PA++++, 80 minutes water resistant
βοΈ 100% vegan and 100% organic, audited to NSF/ANSI 305
βοΈ Proud partners of Reef Check Australia
A word on "reef safe" β it isn't a regulated certification in Australia, so we don't wear it as a badge. We back it with the formula instead. NOAA has raised concerns about certain chemical UV filters washing off swimmers and reaching coral, and points to mineral filters such as non-nano zinc oxide as an alternative. Ours is chemical UV filter free. Zinc, and nothing else doing the filtering.
Made small batch, checked every run. π

Pack mineral only for the cenotes.
Cenotes are freshwater sinkholes fed by underground rivers, and in regions like the YucatΓ‘n that water carries on out towards the reef. Anything that rinses off your skin in the pool goes with it β which is why so many cenote operators now ask swimmers to shower beforehand and wear mineral sunscreen only, and why some ask for none at all.
Reef Safe Australia Mineral Surf & Snorkel Sunscreen is Broad Spectrum SPF50+, PA++++, and 80 minutes water resistant, so it holds through a swim rather than washing off in the first few minutes.
β 100% mineral, chemical UV filter free
β SPF50+, 80 minutes water resistant
β No oxybenzone, octinoxate or octocrylene
Non-nano zinc oxide is the only active doing the UV work. 100% vegan, and made here in Brisbane.
