🌱 what's really in your skincare?

i’ve met $200 serums with very average personalities.

expensive skincare can be incredible.

so can inexpensive skincare.

a well-formulated serum may deliver antioxidants, peptides, humectants or other targeted ingredients beautifully.

a simple, single-ingredient oil may soften dry skin, support the skin barrier + reduce moisture loss just as beautifully.

neither is automatically better.

the problem is when we assume a higher price means a better product.

sometimes you’re paying for research + formulation.

sometimes you’re paying for a heavy bottle, beautiful packaging + a very convincing campaign.

the price tells you what they charged.

the ingredient list tells you what you bought.

i’m not trying to look younger.

i’m trying to look after the skin i have.

to keep it comfortable.

to support its barrier.

to nourish it as it changes.

to protect it from unnecessary damage.

* to age well without treating every line, pore or patch of pigment like something has gone wrong.

i love skincare.

but i’m not interested in spending the rest of my life fighting my own face.

healthy skin can still move.

it can still crease.

it can still have texture, pigmentation + signs of a life actually lived.

the goal isn’t to reverse my age.

the goal is healthy, resilient skin for as long as possible.

skincare should support ageing. not make us afraid of it.

everyone wants to see the product. no one sees the years before it.

the hours at a laptop.

the research no one notices.

the ideas that get rewritten.

the decisions that feel tiny now but will eventually shape everything.

today, i’m working on the website.

it’s not glamorous. it doesn’t look like much. + there’s still a long way to go.

but this is what building something often looks like before anyone else calls it a business.

quiet work.

boring work.

work that might not pay off for years.

i’m not ready to show you everything yet.

but i am building the zook lab — one invisible step at a time.

some “glass skin” is skincare. some of it is surface styling.

the poreless, perfectly smooth, highly reflective finish you see online is not always evidence that someone’s skin has fundamentally changed.

silicones such as dimethicone can spread over the skin in a thin film, improve slip + temporarily smooth the appearance of surface irregularities. that can help light reflect more evenly, creating a glossy, glass-like finish.

once the product is washed away, much of that immediate visual effect goes with it.

but this is where the internet usually loses the nuance:

silicones are not automatically bad.

dimethicone can also act as an emollient + protective ingredient that helps limit moisture loss. silicone-based formulas may feel smoother, less sticky + more elegant on the skin.

the problem isn’t that a product creates an instant finish.

the problem is believing that finish means the skin underneath has become poreless, texture-free or permanently transformed.

glass-looking skin + healthy skin are not necessarily the same thing.

your face was never supposed to become a renovation project.

somewhere along the way, normal skin became a list of things to fix.

pores became flaws.
lines became damage.
pigmentation became failure.
ageing became something to apologise for.

then came the solutions.

another serum.
another treatment.
another promise that this bottle might finally make you feel finished.

i love skincare.

i love caring for my skin, learning about ingredients + finding products that genuinely support it.

but skincare should not depend on making women feel broken first.

your skin can have texture, movement, pigment + lines + still be healthy.

care for your face.

don’t let marketing teach you to hate it.

this is a genuinely lovely product. i still won’t use it.

my husband uses Burt's Bees lemon butter cuticle cream constantly — on his cuticles, hands + stubborn dry patches.

* honestly, i understand why.

sweet almond oil + cocoa butter soften dry skin, while beeswax + candelilla wax leave behind a protective layer that helps reduce moisture loss. sunflower oil + vitamin e add more skin-conditioning support.

it’s rich, practical + clearly works beautifully.

but it contains beeswax, which means it isn’t vegan — so it’s not a product i use personally.

that doesn’t make it a bad formula.

it just means it doesn’t align with my values.

burt’s bees makes some genuinely lovely products, but every formula still deserves to be assessed individually. natural does not automatically mean vegan, fragrance-free or suitable for every skin type.

good formula. not vegan. not for me.

this is fake tan for people who hate fake tan.

i love the idea of a warmer, more even-looking glow.

i do not love the smell, heaviness + instant orange panic that can come with traditional fake tan.

Ere Perez Natural Beauty guava gradual tan is a water-based facial tanning serum made with dha + erythrulose for gradual colour, plus aloe, glycerin + guava extract for hydration + skin conditioning.

it’s also alcohol-free, fragrance-free, vegan + designed to build slowly rather than suddenly turning your face three shades darker.

i mix a few drops into moisturiser at night, wash my hands properly + let it develop while i sleep.

the result is subtle, not streaky + much easier to control.

this is exactly how facial tan should work.

your lip balm might be the reason you keep needing lip balm.

no, your lips are not chemically “addicted” to it.

but some balms contain fragrance, flavour, menthol or other ingredients that can irritate sensitive lips.

that irritation can look like:

dryness.
peeling.
burning.
cracking.
constant reapplication.

so the balm feels soothing for a moment… but the underlying irritation may continue.

the Woohoo Body lip balm i use skips the added fragrance + flavour + is the best lip balm i’ve ever found + loved 💛

instead, it contains macadamia oil, castor oil, shea butter + plant waxes that soften the lips + help form a protective layer to reduce moisture loss.

simple. vegan. no minty tingle pretending to be treatment.

not every fragranced balm will irritate every person — but if your lips never seem to improve, turn the tube around + read the ingredients.

the $10 skincare tool i use every day.

nothing fancy. no batteries. no replacement heads. no ridiculous price tag.

just a soft silicone face scrubber that helps me work cleanser over my skin without dragging at it with a face cloth.

it rinses clean, dries quickly + feels gentle when i use a light hand.

the important bit: i’m not aggressively scrubbing or trying to “deep clean” my pores. more friction is not better skincare.

cheap, simple + actually useful.

i’ve linked the one i use in my bio. it’s an amazon affiliate link, which means i may earn a small commission if you buy through it, at no extra cost to you.

the only mineral sunscreen i actually want to wear.

most zinc sunscreens lose me at the texture.

too thick.
too white.
too greasy.
too hard to blend.

this one is tinted, fragrance-free, suitable for sensitive skin + uses zinc oxide for broad-spectrum spf 50+ protection.

the real test with sunscreen isn’t whether the packaging sounds good.

it’s whether you’ll actually put enough on + happily reapply it.

this one passed.
