The She Plays to Win Lionesses A Team, the UK's only all-female chess team, earned promotion to Division 1 of the Four Nations Chess League after years of proving they belong. Created to give girls a place to compete in a game where women remain vastly underrepresented, the team is now being told it can no longer compete as an all-women lineup because league rules require every top-division team to include at least one player of each gender.

The league says the rule is intended to encourage women's participation in chess. The players argue it does the opposite, forcing them to replace one of their own after earning their place on merit.

"The expectations for me were always a lot lower than they were for male players,"" team member Emily Maton said. "I'd have coaches say things like: 'You're very good for a girl.'"

After leading her team to promotion, Maton says the decision undermines everything they worked for. "We got to the top proving everyone wrong, and now this undermines that."

Women make up only about 11% of the world's top-rated chess players. The players say this ruling sends the wrong message to girls and women who want to compete.
