"Never take directions from someone who hasn't been where you want to go."

I think about that quote a lot after 26 years in this industry.

Honest confession: when I started out, I had no idea what I was doing behind the scenes. So I copied everyone else. I watched what other artists were doing and figured that must be the way.

It wasn't.

I didn't know anything about their business, their money, or their real experience. So I took a lot of wrong turns. Wasted time, expensive mistakes, and years longer than it should have taken to feel confident.

That's when it clicked. Being good at hair and makeup wasn't enough. I needed to learn business.

So for the next five years, that's what I did. A digital marketing course at RMIT, every business and mindset book I could get my hands on, workshops, and at one point a business coach I paid $1,600 a month for six months. That's how serious I was about getting it right.

Fast forward to now. I've worked with celebrities and members of the royal family in Dubai, and I run Melbourne's highest Google-reviewed hair and makeup academy.

My students ask me the same questions I used to have:

How do I get paying clients?
How do I make this a real business, not a weekend thing?
How do I feel confident in my work?

My answer is always the same. Stop looking sideways at what everyone's posting. Most of it isn't the full picture. Learn the real skills, understand the business side, and learn from someone who's actually done it.
