Taking the young fella out on a board I picked up on FB Marketplace. Previous owner had dodgied up the fin box on the rocks so I had Hayden Woolley fix her up for me and it’s living a second life. Some rando “Cult” board. Not the best for a wee fella but it’ll do for today. Loving the weather and living in Paradise.
Time to put the phone down and get outside.

For those of you who have followed us for a bit, you’ll know we have this notion of Ninth Wave moments and inspirations. Ella’s remarkable story sums up the spirit we aspire to.

Ella Maillart (1903 to 1997) was a Swiss sportswoman turned travel writer. She sailed for Switzerland at the 1924 Paris Olympics (slide 3), captained the Swiss women’s field hockey team and raced as an international skier before she found the thing she was actually built for.
In 1932, she set out alone from Moscow across Soviet Turkestan. She crossed Kyrgyzstan into the Tien Shan range, climbed the roughly 5,000 metre peak Sari Tor on improvised skis, passed through Tashkent, Samarkand, Khiva and Bukhara, traveled down the Amu Darya river, and crossed the Kyzylkum, the Desert of Red Sands, entirely by herself. She published the journey as Turkestan Solo.
In 1935, she set out again, this time with journalist Peter Fleming (slide 4), on a roughly 3,500 mile overland route from Japanese occupied Peking through the closed province of Sinkiang to Kashmir. The trip took seven to eight months by train, truck, on foot, on horseback and by camel, crossing the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts to the Hindu Kush through territory disrupted by civil war between Chinese nationalist and communist forces. She published her account as Forbidden Journey. Fleming published his own version of the same trip as News from Tartary.
She spent the following decades writing about Asia as a place with its own histories, not a backdrop for European adventure. She photographed as constantly as she wrote, and some of those images are now on view at Photo Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland, through November 1, 2026.

How come this moment in time hasn’t been turned into a movie?
In June 1978, The Cramps set up their equipment in the courtyard of Napa State Mental Hospital in California. Around 100 patients watched alongside a handful of punks, all under the supervision of hospital staff. It sounded like a recipe for disaster, but the idea came from Bay Area writer, DJ and promoter Howie Klein. Klein brought in The Mutants and The Cramps and invited Joe Rees of Target Video to document the show.
The Mutants opened the show, and before long, patients and punks were dancing and pogoing together. By the end of their set, the audience had even made its way onto the stage.
Then The Cramps took the stage.
“We’re the Cramps, and we’re from New York City, and we drove 3,000 miles to play for you people,” Lux Interior told the crowd. “And somebody told me you people are crazy, but I’m not so sure about that. You seem to be all right to me.”
There was no clear distinction between the band and the hospital’s patients. Everyone was simply part of the show.
Thanks to Target Video, the concert was preserved on video and can still be seen today. Joe Rees filmed around 20 minutes of The Cramps’ set using a Sony Portapak camera. The black-and-white footage captured patients living out their rockstar dreams on Lux’s microphone, while punks and patients blurred together in the crowd. The footage was later released on VHS.
More than four decades later, it remains one of the most unforgettable and unexpected shows in punk history.

Running of the Ducks - As an adrenaline ju**ie I’ve searched the world for the next hit. From bungy jumping in Nepal to lawn darts in Louisiana, and even returning books late at the Coolum Library, I’ve had some major “rush” moments. However, nothing could prepare me for Bali’s “running of the ducks” - literally hundreds of carnivorous and ravenous ducks charging the black sand beaches of Keramas. Think Spain’s, Running of the Bulls, but with me legging it down an Indo beach with a Bintang in hand.
This is the Ninth Wave life.
Now this is a sport I could train for. Wouldn’t mind opening a little store like this myself.

“Inspired by an oceanography friend, John Anderson decided to open the first beachcombing museum in the US: John’s Beachcombing Museum in Forks Washington.
He’s been beachcombing for 46 years as a way of exercising, connecting to nature and cleaning his local beaches. Many of his finds are made of plastic, which deteriorate in seawater to form ever smaller microplastic molecules. He calls his finds “educational tools” and they range from old toys, to rubber boots, toothbrushes, trainers, a giant collection of fishing buoys and even a nuclear submarine locator beacon.
