Here's something most people don't realise: the SPF number on your sunscreen only measures protection from UVB rays — the ones that cause sunburn. It says nothing about UVA, the rays that go deeper into the skin and are the real driver behind fine lines, pigmentation, and loss of firmness over time.
That's what "broad spectrum" actually means — it's the sign a sunscreen has been separately tested to protect against UVA as well as UVB, not just the burn.
This is exactly why sunscreen isn't just a summer, beach-day thing. UVA rays are present all year round, they come through window glass, and they don't need direct sun to reach your skin — which is why daily, broad spectrum protection is one of the single most effective things you can do for mature skin, more than almost any serum in your routine.
If you've been treating sunscreen as optional on cloudy days or when you're indoors most of the day, this is your sign to make it non-negotiable.
Your foundation isn't sinking into your lines throughout the day — it's building up around them. Every time you touch your face, blink, smile, that little bit of product shifts and collects in the same spots, and by 2pm it can look heavier and more obvious than it did at 9am.
The fix isn't more powder. Adding product on top just adds to the buildup you're trying to get rid of, and that's exactly what makes lines look more noticeable, not less.
Here's what I do instead: I use a clean, dry brush and gently pat over those areas — never wipe or drag — to break up and lift the excess that's collected. Then I sweep the brush lightly across to take that buildup away completely. No extra foundation. No extra powder. Just removing what's already there.
Your skin still has its base coverage where it needs it, it just isn't overloaded in the areas doing the most moving throughout the day. Two minutes, no product, and your makeup looks fresh again instead of "cakey."

I took a few days off last week and drove to Melbourne for 2 days. I took this photo standing right in front of the window with the light shining in.
This is me after a full day walking around Melbourne — no touch ups, no filters, no lipstick. I'll be 56 in a month.
Here's the thing — we're the generation that grew up sunbaking with baby oil, before SPF was really understood and before skincare ranges existed the way they do now. We didn't know better. The sun spots and the smile lines aren't a failure of self-care, they're evidence of decades lived, mostly in the sun, mostly laughing - the 80's for me were spent outdoors, and on my drive I reflected only on the fun bits - being healthy and really enjoying things like rowing! It was brilliant.
I look after my skin properly now — that part matters. But I'm not chasing Botox for these smile lines or laser for this sun damage. If that's what you want for yourself, genuinely, go for it, your face is yours. I just don't want anyone feeling obligated to do it. These marks are part of me. I've earned them.
Healthy skin, not perfect skin. That's the whole philosophy.
