Human Rights Organisation in Bangladesh Eventually, a decision was arrived at to form an organisation in order to advance such rights.
In 1994, a group of human rights activists initiated discussions and underscored the need to uphold the civil and political rights of the people of Bangladesh along with social, cultural and economic rights. On October 10, 1994, Odhikar (a Bangla word that means ‘rights’) came into being with the aim to create a wider monitoring and awareness raising system on the abuse of civil and political rights. The principal objectives of the organisation are to raise the awareness of human rights and its various abuses, on the one hand and to create a vibrant democratic system through election monitoring on the other. The organisation also performs policy advocacy to address the current human rights situation. Odhikar has no field or branch offices. Instead, it has trained more than 500 people all over the country to be human rights defenders, who are relied upon for information outside Dhaka. These activities help contribute to eventual positive steps towards the creation of transparency and accountability in the responsible sectors of the government with an aim to improve its human rights record and to facilitate an active democracy with the participation of people from all sections of society.

গুমের শিকার ব্যক্তিদের স্মরণে আন্তর্জাতিক দিবস উপলক্ষে ২৯ আগস্ট ঢাকার বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্রে মানবাধিকার সংগঠন অধিকার আয়োজিত আলোচনা সভায় বক্তব্য রাখেন বাগেরহাটের মোংলার মিরাজ শেখের স্ত্রী মুক্তা খাতুন।
মিরাজ শেখকে কোস্ট গার্ডের সদস্যরা ১০ই এপ্রিল গুম করেছে বলে অভিযোগ করেছেন তাঁর স্ত্রী, পরিবারের অন্যান্য সদস্য এবং কিছু প্রত্যক্ষদর্শী।
মিরাজ শেখকে গুম করা হয়নি এই মর্মে দাবী করেছেন স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রী সালাহউদ্দিন আহমেদ। বাগেরহাটের মোংলায় নিখোঁজ হওয়া মিরাজ শেখ প্রসঙ্গে তিনি বলেন, "ঘটনাটি নিয়ে "স্বাধীনভাবে তদন্ত করা হয়েছে। তদন্তে বনদস্যুদের সঙ্গে তাঁর সংশ্লিষ্টতা এবং তাদের অভ্যন্তরীণ বিরোধের বিষয়টি এসেছে।"
অধিকার মনে করে স্বাধীন তদন্ত তখনই গ্রহণযোগ্যতা পায় যখন মানবাধিকার কমিশনের আইন এবং গুম প্রতিরোধ ও প্রতিকার আইনে শৃঙ্খলা বাহিনীর বিরুদ্ধে স্বাধীন তদন্ত করার ক্ষমতা দেয়া হয় এবং স্বাধীন মানবাধিকার কমিশনের মাধ্যমেই তা করা সম্ভব।কাউকেই গুম করা যাবেনা - তিনি "বনদস্যু" হোন বা অন্য কিছু। এই ধরণের অসংবেদনশীল বক্তব্য ভুক্তভোগী পরিবারের ট্রমা আরো বাড়িয়ে দেয়।
অধিকার অবিলম্বে মানবাধিকার কমিশন এবং গুম প্রতিরোধ ও প্রতিকার খসড়া আইনে শৃঙ্খলা বাহিনীর বিরুদ্ধে স্বাধীনভাবে তদন্ত করার ক্ষমতা যুক্ত করার আহবান জানাচ্ছে।

৩০ অগাস্ট ২০২৬ এ গুমের শিকার ব্যক্তিদের স্মরণে আন্তর্জাতিক দিবস উপলক্ষে ফ্যাসিস্ট শেখ হাসিনার সময়কালের গুমের ভিক্টিম এবং পরিবারদের সাথে নিয়ে অধিকার সংশ্লিষ্ট মানবাধিকার কর্মীরা রাজশাহী, খুলনা, চট্রগ্রাম, ময়মনসিংহ, ঠাকুরগাঁও, ফেনী, লক্ষীপুর, সিরাজগঞ্জ, বরিশালে ও সুনামগঞ্জে মানববন্ধন এবং সভার আয়োজন করেন।
On August 30, 2026, to mark the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, human rights activists associated with organized human chains and meetings in Rajshahi, Khulna, Chattogram, Mymensingh, Thakurgaon, Feni, Lakshmipur, Sirajganj, Barishal, and Sunamganj, alongside victims of enforced disappearance and their families from the period of authoritarian Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.
গুমের শিকার ব্যক্তিদের স্মরণে আন্তর্জাতিক দিবস উপলক্ষে অধিকার আয়োজিত আলোচনা সভা গতকাল বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্রে অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।
সভায় বক্তব্য প্রদান করেন জাতীয় সংসদের মাননীয় সংসদ সদস্য মাহবুব উদ্দিন খোকন, মীর আহমেদ বিন কাশেম এবং আব্দুল্লাহ আল আমিনসহ অন্যান্য অতিথিরা।

"Rights activists and families of victims of enforced disappearances on Saturday demanded that the National Human Rights Commission’s independence be guaranteed, enabling it to investigate allegations of disappearances and hold those responsible accountable.
They made the demand at a discussion organised by rights organisation Odhikar in Dhaka to mark the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, observed globally on August 30."
