EMPTY PLAINS

Van voor zonsopgang volgden we deze leeuwin, mama van slechts één overgebleven welpje. Het welpje zat verstopt in de dichte bush, en mama trok op jacht.

Regelmatig bleef ze zitten, de horizon afspeurend. Wij deden hetzelfde en wanhoopten samen met haar. Prooidieren die weten dat er een leeuw in de buurt is, zoeken uiteraard veiliger oorden op. Leeuwen hebben het best moeilijk wanneer ze er alleen voor staan.

From before sunrise, we followed this lioness, the mother of a single surviving cub. Her cub was hidden safely in the dense bush while she set out to hunt.

Time and again, she stopped to scan the horizon. We did the same, and slowly began to share her frustration. Prey animals that know a lion is nearby naturally move to safer ground, making the hunt even more challenging. For a lioness on her own, survival is never easy.

EARLY START

Wilde honden hebben we gevraagd, wilde honden hebben we gekregen 😅 Bij het zesde kamp dat we bezochten tijdens de prospectiereis, sliepen de honden zelfs aan het kampvuur. We moesten ze enkel in de gaten houden en in de auto springen zodra ze net voor zonsopgang op stap gingen.
Het lanceren van deze nieuwe fotosafari nam een vliegende start, in die mate dat we een extra vertrekdatum moesten inplannen. Er zijn nu nog slechts 2 éénpersoonskamers beschikbaar. Wees er snel bij!

EARLY START

We asked for African wild dogs, and African wild dogs we got! 😅 In the sixth camp we visited during our scouting trip, the pack was actually sleeping right by the campfire. All we had to do was keep an eye on them and jump into the vehicle as soon as they set off, just before sunrise.
The launch of this new photo safari has been an incredible success—so much so that we had to add an extra departure date. There are now only two single rooms still available. Don’t hesitate—book soon!

Mijn foto's blijven soms jarenlang opgeslagen op een harde schijf zonder dat er iets mee gebeurt. Nu ben ik recent resoluut aan de foto's van Tanzania 2023 (🙈) begonnen. Het fijne van zolang wachten met het bekijken van foto's, is dat je vergeten herinneringen opnieuw met verwondering beleeft. Deze mtoto simba (leeuwenwelp in Swahili) lag onvervaard maar gehoorzaam op moeder te wachten terwijl deze op jacht was.

Some of my photos remain untouched on a hard drive for years before I finally get around to them. Recently, I decided it was time to start working through my Tanzania 2023 images (🙈).
One of the joys of waiting so long to revisit old photographs is rediscovering forgotten memories and experiencing them with fresh wonder. This little mtoto simba (lion cub in Swahili) lay fearlessly, yet obediently, waiting for its mother while she was out hunting.
