🐝 Spring 🐝
It honestly brings me so much joy to know that our colony has made it through the winter!
This hive was a new nuc last year and though still fairly small, they're proving to be mighty as hell!
We gave them lots of food yesterday during the warmest party of the day! That gorgeous Queen should be laying up a storm right about now and those babies need pollen the grow healthy and strong!
Ryan suggested we put on suits, as they were likely going to come at us! And they sure did! I love their sense of protecting the hive, there's always one lil lady that's going to get right in our face and give us s**t! I was grateful to have listened to the suit suggestion!
Can't wait to get in there for a full inspection just as soon as the weather permits! I love seeing what they've been up to in there and always jacked up to see new brood!
Here's to a healthy and successful season!
🐝 They're ALIVE 🐝
The first time we head into the hive in the new season is always a bit nerve wracking!
Will they be alive?
Will they be strong?
Are they dead?
Good news is that they are alive and well! What a relief!
With weather like we've had this winter with the extreme cold, to gorgeous mild days, it's always a worry that they could run out of food!
Every time the weather gets warm, these ladies leave the hive, may even go on a little tour post cleansing flight!
When they exert more energy leaving the hive, they need to replace the energy with the honey stores we leave them over winter. Typically we leave them 100lbs of honey as it acts as both food and insulation!
We start feeding them at this time for food security as that beautiful Queen will start laying eggs soon for the early spring season. Those babies need good food to grow healthy and strong!
Here's to a strong season! Looking forward to a whole new year of learning and supporting these amazing and resilient little beings!

🐝 Bring the Balance 🐝
I'm finding myself reaching for this aroma more and more through this VERY long month! 😜
January's can be a bit tough generally, still dark, typically freezing,( though it's been gorgeous is YYC) and there's always just a bit of pressure to start the new year strong!
The aromas in Orange Blossom are fresh and herbaceous! And though the name may sound fruity and sweet, it's inspired by the blossoms of orange and not the fruit itself! Which keeps this aroma soft and approachable!
This aroma is bright and made to rejuvenate the skin and brighten the mood! Which makes it a winner for this time of year!
🍃Neroli has a calming effect body and mind and rejuvenate the skin. It’s also considered an antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and is great for uplifting the spirits while providing relief of grief, and insomnia.
🍃Spearmint aids in focus, elevates the mind and mood, and also helps to treat headaches and fatigue. It’s the sweetest of all mints and helps to encourage fresh ideas!
🍃Black Pepper is said to be one of the oldest spices! It aids in preventing infections, and is antibacterial!

Ok, I'm definitely a little late on the new year post, and truthfully have been quite happy to chill out, stay warm, and enjoy a calmer start to this year.
Basically following the assignment to move in slow, and not touch anything! 😜
Since 2010 Ryan and I have been smudging our home each NYE as well as writing some annual intentions. It's a tradition I truly love! A clean slate through and through!
This year I was so excited to have harvested and hand tied our smudge sticks from my own garden! (I specifically grew the sage and lemon balm for this purpose.) And burning them this year hit differently, felt more intentional, more cleansing.
In past January's, I was always so amped up, motivated to take the bull by the horns and push hard.
This year my biggest intention is to loosen my grip, allow things to flow, simply trust that my own "garden" will provide, and it will hit different.
