The Calls I Never Made

For years, I lived in a world where survival meant ignoring the context around me. In the trade, you train yourself to see transactions instead of people, products instead of consequences. It’s a defense mechanism. If you start looking too closely at where the money comes from or where the drugs go, the weight of it will pull you down.

So, I looked away.

But looking back now, the hardest part isn't remembering the risk, the law enforcement, or the constant tension. The hardest part is remembering the doors I walked through and the little faces I saw on the other side.

I remember one house in particular. It was mid-afternoon, but inside, the blinds were drawn, keeping out the daylight. The air was heavy with neglect. I was there to do business, but as I stood near the entryway, a small girl peeked around the corner of a hallway. She was holding a worn-out stuffed animal, looking at me with total indifference, as if strangers coming and going at all hours was completely normal.

There was no food on the counters. No laughter. Just the dark, desperate tension of addiction holding the household hostage.

I completed the transaction, took the money, and walked out. I got in my car, turned the key, and told myself it wasn't my business. I told myself I was just supplying a demand, and that getting involved meant putting a target on my own back.

The truth is, I was protecting myself at the expense of kids who couldn't protect themselves. Every time I left a home like that, I had a phone in my pocket. I could have made an anonymous call to Child Protective Services. I could have given those children a chance at being noticed by someone who could help. Instead, I prioritized my own freedom over the safety of innocent kids.

That regret stayed buried until the day my son was born.
Holding my boy for the first time completely shattered the wall of compartmentalization I had built around my past. Looking down at his helpless face, the reality of what a child truly needs unconditional love, safety, stability, and a present parent hit me with full force. In that moment, I didn't just see my son; I saw every child whose living room I had stood in, and I finally understood the full weight of what they were being deprived of.

I knew I couldn't be the father my son deserved if I stayed anywhere near that life or the substances that fueled it. He gave me the mirror I needed to see who I had become, and the courage to change it.

It has been seven years since I walked away from drugs and that lifestyle. Rebuilding from the ground up hasn't been easy, and the stigma of where I came from is heavy. But the regret of my silence back then is heavier. I can’t go back and change those afternoons, and I can’t retroactively call for help for the children whose names I never knew.

What I can do is ensure my son grows up in a home built on integrity, safety, and love and use the painful lessons of my past to make sure I never look away from the vulnerability of a child ever again.
