LockNess Loc Maintenance

I get asked by many "How do you deep clean those things?"

Well here is what I do..... Please note that everyone does things a bit differently with their locs, and you can choose to take or not take any suggestions I've put up here. BUT most of all be CAUTIOUS of the Hot Water! I like mine really hot, but some people are more sensitive to that, so maybe start "warm" and add extra heat as you understand your own hair and scalp tolerances.

A Loc deep cleanse (or loc detox) removes trapped lint, oils, hard water minerals, and product buildup that normal washing misses. It uses a warm water soak with baking soda and apple c***r vinegar (ACV), and essential oils - do every 6 months or as you feel you need it.

What You Need

Hot water in a basin - About 6 Litres
½ cup baking soda
1 cup apple c***r vinegar (ACV)
Optional essential oils
Residue-free clarifying shampoo

1. Prepare the Bath: Fill your basin with hot water (as warm as you can make it without scalding your scalp or hands as you massage the locs), add the apple c***r vinegar and essential oils and stir around. Prepare the baking soda and get it ready to dump in the water. Submerge your hair in the water until the locs are saturated. Then sprinkle the baking soda into the water all over your locs and stir it all around trying to get the soda to “fizz” around your locs and massage it into and around your locs.
2. Soak Your Locs: once you’ve mixed it around a bit, make sure you submerge your dreadlocks entirely into the mixture. Let them soak for 20 minutes, occasionally gently squeezing and massaging the locs to release trapped dirt. Optional: If you have a friend nearby, you can have them add boiled water to the basin in the last 5 minutes to reheat and get extra warm soak time. The warmth will loosen the built up oils and shampoo residue. CAUTION - Burns can occur if using too hot of water so please be careful! Always use extra precaution when adding boiling water to the basin. Do NOT pour onto scalp, and be careful of splashes.
3. Rinse: Dump out the dirty water and rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water and shampoo. I just jump in the shower and do a regular wash.
