How it spreads

3. ትኩረት ሊሰጣቸው የሚገቡ ነጥቦች
➡️የካልሲየም አስፈላጊነት፡ ጣይ ዶሮዎች እንቁላል በሚጥሉበት ወቅት የካልሲየም ፍላጎታቸው ከፍተኛ ነው። የኖራ ድንጋይ (Limestone) ካላገኙ የተፈጨ የአሰስ/የእንቁላል ዛጎል ወይም የአጥንት ዱቄት መጠቀም ይቻላል።
✅ንጽህና፡ የሚጠቀሟቸው እህሎች ከሻጋታ (Aflatoxin) ነፃ መሆናቸውን ያረጋግጡ፤ ሻጋታ ያለው መኖ እንቁላል ማቋረጥ እና የዶሮዎች ሞት ያመጣል።.
✅ውሃ፡ ጣይ ዶሮ ሁልጊዜ ንጹህና ቀዝቃዛ ውሃ ማግኘት አለባት፤ ውሃ ካነሳት እንቁላል መጣሏን ታቆማለች።

Can You Read Cow F***s from Score 1 to 5?

Cow f***s can provide useful clues about ration structure, digestion, and rumen response.

A simple 1-to-5 f***l scoring system can help farms describe f***l consistency more consistently and identify when feeding conditions may deserve closer attention.

Score 1: Very loose or watery

This condition may be associated with:

• Excessive starch or protein
• Excessive mineral intake
• Insufficient roughage
• Excess nitrogen reaching the hindgut
• Diarrhea or digestive disturbance

Score 2: Loose f***s

This may be seen when:

• Roughage content is low
• Physically effective fiber is insufficient
• Cattle are grazing young, lush pasture

Score 3: Appropriate consistency

This is generally considered the desirable middle range.

The f***s are neither excessively loose nor overly dry, suggesting that ration structure and digestive passage may be relatively balanced.

Score 4: Firm f***s

This type may be more common in:

• Dry cows or growing cattle
• Animals receiving lower-quality forage
• Rations with relatively low protein or fermentable nutrients

Score 5: Very dry and firm

This may be associated with:

• Diets dominated by straw or dehydrated forage
• Low moisture intake
• Very slow digestive passage
• A possible risk of constipation or blockage

How should f***l scoring be used?

Do not judge the ration from one f***l pile or one animal alone.

Instead, check:

• Several cows from the same group
• Recent ration or raw-material changes
• Feed intake and water availability
• Rumination activity
• Visible grain or long fiber in f***s
• Production stage and overall animal response

F***l scoring does not provide a final diagnosis.

But when used together with ration records, rumination, intake, and production data, it can become a practical daily management tool.

The goal is not simply to achieve one perfect-looking f***l pile.

THE MUZZLE DOESN’T LIE

Dehydration occurs when a bovine loses more fluids than it takes in. Common causes include diarrhea, fever, extreme heat, lack of drinking water, severe mastitis, bloat (ruminal tympany), difficult calving, and infectious diseases.

👉 A dehydrated animal can deteriorate rapidly if treatment is delayed.

👃 THE MUZZLE AS A KEY INDICATOR

Under normal conditions, a healthy bovine’s muzzle should be:

✅ Moist
✅ Shiny
✅ Cool to the touch
✅ With pink mucous membranes

When these characteristics change, it is often a sign that something is wrong.

📊 DEGREES OF DEHYDRATION BASED ON MUZZLE APPEARANCE

🟢 NORMAL HYDRATION (0–4%)

* Moist, shiny muzzle
* Pink mucous membranes
* Normal saliva production
* Bright and active animal

👉 No cause for concern.

🟡 MILD DEHYDRATION (5–6%)

* Muzzle becomes less moist and slightly dry
* Pale pink mucous membranes
* Thick, sticky saliva
* Mild depression or reduced activity

👉 Early warning sign. Usually correctable with clean water and oral electrolytes.

🟠 MODERATE DEHYDRATION (7–9%)

* Dry, dull muzzle
* Pale or tacky mucous membranes
* Dry tongue
* Slightly sunken eyes
* Reduced water intake

👉 A serious condition requiring immediate rehydration.

🔴 SEVERE DEHYDRATION (≥10%)

* Very dry, cracked muzzle
* White or grayish mucous membranes
* Little or no saliva
* Deeply sunken eyes
* Animal is recumbent or breathing rapidly

🚨 Veterinary emergency. The animal may die within hours if left untreated.

🔍 OTHER SIGNS THAT SUPPORT THE DIAGNOSIS

The muzzle should not be evaluated alone. Also check for:

✔️ Delayed skin tent return (decreased skin elasticity)
✔️ Sunken eyes
✔️ Scant, concentrated urine
✔️ Lethargy or weakness
✔️ Increased heart rate

💦 WHAT TO DO DEPENDING ON THE SEVERITY

Mild

✔️ Provide clean, fresh drinking water
✔️ Administer oral electrolyte solutions
✔️ Keep the animal in a shaded, cool environment

Moderate

✔️ Give oral rehydration fluids if the animal

Uterine Torsion in a Pregnant Cow:
Uterine torsion is one of those emergencies that can suddenly complicate calving… and if not treated in time, the cow, the calf, or even both can be lost 😬

🔄 What is uterine torsion?
It happens when the uterus twists around its own axis:
👉 It may rotate 90°, 180°, 270°, or even more
👉 This twist “strangles” the birth canal 🚫

In simple farm words:
The calf is ready to come out… but the exit is twisted 😵

🧠 Why does it happen?
• Sudden movements of the cow 🤸‍♀️
• Large or poorly positioned calves 🐮
• Relaxation of pelvic ligaments before calving
• More common in adult cows

👀 How can you suspect it in the field?
This is where close observation matters 👇

• The cow is in labor… but there is no progress ⏳
• The calf does not come out ❌
• Restlessness and pain, standing up and lying down repeatedly 😣
• On examination: the birth canal feels twisted

👉 It is not a typical delayed labor… something is wrong.

⚠️ What complications can it cause?
Here is the serious part:

❌ The calf cannot be delivered
🩸 Blood circulation to the uterus becomes compromised
💀 The fetus may die
🚨 Risk of uterine rupture

👉 This is a true obstetrical emergency.

🛠️ What can be done?
Treatment depends on the degree of torsion:

✅ Mild cases:
• Manual correction ✋
• Rolling the cow (casting/rolling technique) 🔄

🚨 Severe cases:
• Cesarean section 🏥🔪

👉 The longer the delay, the worse the prognosis.

⏱️ Time is EVERYTHING
💥 If treatment is delayed:
• The calf may die
• The uterus can become severely damaged
• The cow may die

ETIOLOGY:

Caused by Actinomyces bovis, a Gram-positive bacterium that enters through wounds in the oral cavity caused by coarse feed, thorns, or sharp objects. It primarily infects the jaw bone, leading to chronic osteomyelitis.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS:

Hard, painless swelling of the lower jaw
Progressive facial deformity
Firm, immovable bony mass
Draining sinuses with thick pus containing yellow “sulfur granules”
Difficulty chewing and reduced feed intake

TREATMENT:

Early cases respond best to sodium iodide (IV) combined with long-term antibiotics (e.g., oxytetracycline or penicillin). Advanced bony lesions often have a guarded prognosis.

✅አንዳንድ ጊዜ የቡና ቅጠሎች ወደ ቢጫነት ሲቀየሩ፣ ከዳርና ከዳር ደግሞ ሲደርቁ ወይም ትላልቅ የተቃጠሉ ነጠብጣቦችን ሲያወጡ ይታያል። ይህ በምርት ላይ ጉዳት ያደርሳል።

✍️የችግሩ ምክንያቶች፡-
👉የእርጥበት/የውኃ እጥረት፡- በሞቃታማና ደረቅ ወቅት፣ ሥሮች በቂ ውኃ መምጠጥ አይችሉም። በዚህም ምክንያት ቅጠሎች መጀመሪያ እርጥበታቸውን ያጣሉ። ይህ የቅጠል ዳርቻዎች መቃጠል፥ የቅጠሎች መጠቅለል እና ቅጠሎች ከመድረሳቸው በፊት መርገፍን ያስከትላል።

👉የማዳበሪያ እና የኬሚካል መቃጠል፡- ብዙ ማዳበሪያ በመጠቀም ብቻ ሁልጊዜ ጥሩ ጤንነት ያለው ቡና ይገኛል ማለት አይደለም። ከመጠን በላይ ማዳበሪያ መጠቀም ወይም የሰብል ማጠናከሪያ ኬሚካሎችን በኃይለኛ ፀሐይ ወቅት መርጨት የቅጠል ሕዋሳትን በመጉዳት ኬሚካላዊ ቃጠሎ ያመጣል።

👉የበሽታዎች ግፊት፡- የቅጠል መቃጠል/መድረቅ፤ ከቡና ቅጠል ዝገት፥ ከአንትራክኖዝ፥ ከቅጠል በሽታ፥ ከተጣበቡ የቅርንጫፍ ስብስቦችና ደካማ የአየር ዝውውር ጋር ሊያያዝ ይችላል።

👉የምግብ ንጥረ ነገሮች አለመመጣጠን፡- እንደ ፖታሺየም (K)፥ ካልሲየም (Ca)፥ ማግኒዚየም (Mg) ያሉ ንጥረ ነገሮች እጥረት ሲኖር ቅጠሎችን ቀጭንና ደካማ እንዲሆኑ በማድረግ ለሙቀትና ለድርቅ ይበልጥ ተጋላጭ ያደርጋቸዋል።

✍️ የችግሩ መፍትሔዎች:-
👉እርጥበትን መጠበቅ፦ በተለይ በደረቅ ወቅት የአፈሩን እርጥበት ሁልጊዜ የተጠበቀ ማድረግ ይገባል።

👉ኮምፖስትና መልችንግ መጠቀም፦ የውኃ ትነትን ለመቀነስና ሥሮችን ከሙቀት ለመጠበቅ የደረቁ ቅጠሎችንና የተፈጥሮ ቁሳቁሶችን አፈር ላይ ማንጠፍ ይመከራል።

👉የተመጣጠነ ምግብ ማቅረብ፦ በናይትሮጅን ላይ ብቻ ሳይደገፉ፤ የተመጣጠነ ተፈጥሯዊ ማዳበሪያ መጠቀም ይበጃል።

👉ቅርንጫፎችን መግረዝ፦ የአየር ዝውውርን ለማሻሻልና የበሽታዎችን ግፊት ለመቀነስ ዘወትር የዛፉን ቅርንጫፎች መግረዝ ወይም መከርከም ይገባል።

👉ማሳን አዘውትሮ መከታተል፦ እንደ ቅጠል ዝገትና አንትራክኖዝ ያሉ በሽታዎችን አስቀድመው በመለየት በጊዜ መፍትሔ መስጠት ያስፈልጋል።
