School holidays are wonderful, but they're also brutal on a parent's body.

Six weeks of lifting, carrying, hauling bags and car seats and tired children.

Days out that mean miles of walking. Beach trips with half the house on your back. Nights where nobody sleeps quite right.

It all adds up.

Parents are some of the people who put their own body lowest on the list. There's always someone else to sort out first.

But you're the one doing all the carrying. Literally.

If your back, neck or shoulders have been complaining since the holidays started, that's not you being soft.

That's a body doing a serious amount of work without anyone looking after it.

There's never a good time to deal with your body.

I hear it constantly.

I'll sort it when work settles down. After the holidays. Once things are less hectic. When I've got a bit more time.

The trouble is, that window rarely arrives. And the body doesn't wait for it.

While you're waiting for the right moment, the pattern is quietly setting in deeper. The compensation becomes the new normal. The thing that would have taken a little attention now takes a lot.

The best time to look at something is when it's still small.

The second best time is now, whatever else is going on.

The body doesn't read your calendar 🙂

Pain doesn't always stop you, sometimes it just makes you say no.

This is the time of year for it. The invitations, the days out, the trips, the long weekends.

For a lot of people, the body starts making the decisions.

You skip the walk because your knee won't thank you. You sit out the game. You think twice about the long drive, the festival, the activity with the kids.

Not because you can't.

Because part of you doesn't quite trust your body to hold up.

That's one of the things people notice most when their body starts working properly again.

Not just less pain. Fewer quiet no's.

You start saying yes to things again without doing the maths first.

What have you found yourself turning down lately?

Pain often shows up on holiday.

It catches people out.

You finally get away, you're doing less, you're meant to be relaxing, and your back goes. Or your neck. Or the old injury flares up out of nowhere 🤦‍♂️

It feels deeply unfair.

But there's usually a reason.

A long flight or drive in one position. A different bed. Carrying heavy cases. Going from sitting all year to suddenly walking miles round a new city.

Or simply slowing down enough that the body finally registers what it's been holding.

A holiday changes the load on your body, sometimes more than normal life does.

If yours tends to complain the moment you stop, that's worth paying attention to. It's often the clearest signal you get all year.

By the time some people reach me, they've already been told to accept it.

That this is just how their body is now. That they should manage it, pace themselves, lower their expectations.

I met someone like that not long ago. Years of being told there was nothing more to be done.

They'd stopped expecting anything different.

We didn't promise a miracle, but we did start asking better questions.

Where did this actually begin? What had the body been working around? What had never been looked at properly?

Bit by bit, things started to move. Not overnight. But in a direction nobody had offered them before.

The body is rarely as stuck as people are told it is.

Most of the time it just hasn't been understood properly yet.

Think about everything you maintain in your life.

Your car gets a service. Your boiler gets a check. Your phone gets an update.

Your body does more work than all of them.

And it's the only one you can't swap out when it stops working properly.

29/07/2026

We're good at maintaining the things we'd hate to lose.

The car gets serviced. The boiler gets checked. The house gets looked after.

We do it without thinking, because we know what it costs to let those things fail.

The body rarely gets the same treatment.

It carries us through every single day, takes every bit of load we put on it, and mostly we only pay attention when it stops cooperating.

The difference is, you can replace a car. You can fix a boiler.

You get one body, and it has to last the whole way.

A Full Body MOT is just that idea taken seriously.

It's a proper look at how everything's working, before something forces the issue 🙏

Funny thing happens when people finally slow down.

The body starts talking.

You take a week off, you get away, you stop running at full pace, and suddenly you notice the headache, the tight back, the tiredness that was there all along.

People often think the break caused it.

It didn't. The break just gave them enough quiet to feel what they'd been carrying.

The nervous system holds on to a lot. Stress, tension, the residue of just keeping going.

When you stop, it finally has the space to let some of it surface.

That's not the holiday going wrong.

That's your body being honest with you, maybe for the first time in months.

Some of the people I see have no pain at all.

They came in once for something specific, we sorted it, and then they made a decision a lot of people don't.

They decided to keep coming back.

Not every single week, and not forever.

Just regularly enough that their body never gets the chance to drift too far from where it should be.

One of them said something that stuck with me. That coming in now feels less like fixing a problem and more like topping up.

That's exactly it.

The body changes week to week. Stress builds. Habits creep in. Old patterns try to reassert themselves.

A little attention, often, keeps all of that in check.

It's a lot easier to maintain something than it is to rescue it 🙂

Rest is good for a tired body, but it's not always the answer for a struggling one.

I hear it a lot, especially this time of year.

I'll rest it on holiday. I'll take it easy for a couple of weeks. It'll settle down.

And sometimes it does, for a while.

But rest doesn't undo a compensation pattern. It doesn't realign posture that's drifted. It doesn't release tension the nervous system has been holding for years.

It just takes the load off for long enough that things quieten down.

Then normal life starts again, and so does the problem.

Rest gives the body a break, but it doesn't give it a different starting point.

That part takes something else.
