Two treatments in one appointment. BBL uses broadband light to target pigment and redness. Brown spots often darken for a few days afterwards before flaking off, which is exactly what you want to see. Halo then creates thousands of microscopic channels in the skin, triggering collagen production and a smoother, more even surface as it renews. BBL can't be used on recently tanned skin, autumn is when many people become suitable for it again.

COOLPEEL

A laser facial that works deeper than a standard peel. It resurfaces the top layer of skin and stimulates collagen beneath it, softening sun damage, fine lines and uneven texture. Recovery is usually a few days of redness and light shedding.

Between October and March, the weather does some of the clinical work for us.

Most laser and light treatments share the same complication, and it's sunlight. Tanned skin competes with the laser, and freshly treated skin picks up pigment far more easily than untreated skin. Lower UV takes most of that risk away, so this is the stretch of the year when courses run at the right strength and heal cleanly.

The laser targets pigment in the hair follicle, and without a tan in the way it can work at full strength every session. Most of what summer did to your skin is probably starting to shown up now.

UV damage runs on a delay. Brown spots and patchy redness tend to surface through September and October, which happens to be when treating them gets much easier. Nearly every laser and light treatment leaves the skin more sensitive to sun for a while afterwards, and this is the stretch of the year when the UK gives you the least of it.

Resurfacing gains the most. Fotona and UltraClear prompt the skin to rebuild from underneath, and the weeks after a session are when fresh skin is most vulnerable to post-inflammatory pigmentation. Acne starts in the sebaceous gland, sitting well below anything you can put on the surface of your skin. That's the reason topical routines so often plateau.

AviClear® was the first acne laser to receive FDA clearance, and it works by reaching that gland directly. The wavelength is 1726 nanometres, chosen because sebum absorbs roughly 1.2 times more energy than water at that point on the spectrum.

The gland heats up but the tissue around it doesn't. Biopsies taken during the clinical studies show the sebaceous gland damaged with the epidermis left intact.

Melanin absorbs very little at this wavelength, which is why it can be used across all six Fitzpatrick skin types. Not every light-based acne treatment can say the same.

The course runs to three sessions of about 30 minutes, three to four weeks apart. A sapphire plate cooled to between 0 and 5 degrees sits against the skin throughout, and most patients get through a session without anaesthetic.
