Client: “Why are my toenails yellow?”
Me: “This is onycholysis - the nail plate has separated from the nail bed. It’s often caused by repeated pressure from shoes or trauma. What size shoes do you wear?” Client: “UK size 5.”
Me: “Let’s check... Oops!
You’re actually a UK size 6.5.
Client: “But my shoes feel comfortable!”
Me: “Maybe... but your toes definitely don’t agree.
{A shoe can feel comfortable while still being too short or too narrow for your feel.
Constant pressure on the toes can lead to nail trauma, onycholysis, thickened nails, pain, and even increase the risk of fungal infections.
Sometimes, the best treatment starts with the right shoe size.

Fungal Nail Infections (Onychomycosis)
Fungal nail infections (onychomycosis) are infections of the nail plate and nail bed, most commonly caused by dermatophytes (fungi). Without proper treatment, they can gradually damage, thicken, and deform the nail.
Infection usually occurs in warm, humid environments such as public swimming pools, saunas, gyms, or through shared footwear and non-sterile pedicure instruments. Fungal spores enter the skin through tiny cracks around the nail or surrounding skin.
Common signs of fungal nail infection:
• Loss of the nail’s natural shine
• White, yellow, or brown discoloration
• Thickened nail plate
• Brittle, crumbly, or splitting nails
• Nail lifting from the nail bed (onycholysis)
• Unpleasant odour in some cases
Risk factors include:
• Wearing tight footwear causing repeated trauma
• Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
• Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis)
• Diabetes or poor circulation
• A weakened immune system
It is important to remember that not every discoloured or thickened nail is caused by a fungal infection. Trauma, psoriasis, eczema, and other nail conditions can look very similar.
For this reason, a laboratory test (nail sample or scraping) is recommended before starting treatment to confirm the diagnosis and ensure the most appropriate treatment plan.
Think something isn’t right?
If you’ve noticed changes in your nails or have concerns about your foot health, don’t wait until the problem gets worse. Early assessment can make treatment easier and more effective.

Your feet tell a story—are you listening? 👣
Many foot conditions start with mild symptoms but can become painful or difficult to treat if ignored. Here are some of the most common issues I see in clinic:
🔸 Cracks (Fissures)
Deep splits in the skin, usually caused by dry skin, pressure, or thick calluses. Left untreated, they can become painful and infected.
🔸 Hyperkeratosis (Thickened Skin/Callus Build-up)
A protective response to repeated pressure or friction. While common, excessive build-up often indicates an underlying biomechanical problem.
🔸 Interdigital Fungal Infection (Athlete’s Foot)
Often starts as itching, redness, peeling, or white, soggy skin between the toes. Early treatment helps prevent it from spreading to the nails.
🔸 Plantar Wart
Caused by the HPV virus. These can be painful when walking and are often mistaken for corns or calluses.
🔸 Corn
A small, concentrated area of hard skin caused by pressure or friction. Unlike calluses, corns have a central core that can make every step uncomfortable.
✨ Remember, treating the symptom isn’t always enough. The key is identifying and addressing the underlying cause to prevent the problem from returning.
Healthy feet are the foundation of your mobility and quality of life. Don’t ignore the signs—they’re your body’s way of asking for help.
📅 If you’re experiencing any of these conditions, book a professional assessment before the problem worsens.

Why does a cracked heel keep coming back? 🤔
One of the most common mistakes beginners make is treating only what they can see.
They remove the hyperkeratosis.
They smooth over the crack.
The heel looks great immediately after the treatment.
But a month later, the client returns with the exact same problem.
Why?🫨
Because a crack is a symptom, not the root cause.
The underlying cause often remains:
✔ Poor foot biomechanics
✔ Increased pressure or weight-bearing
✔ Dry skin
✔ Inappropriate footwear
✔ Lack of proper home care
As a foot care professional, your job isn’t just to treat the foot—it’s to understand why the problem developed and what needs to change to stop it from coming back.
A procedure doesn’t eliminate a cracked heel.
A treatment plan does.
I’ve prepared a FREE guide on managing hyperkeratosis and creating an effective home care routine.
