Everyone nods along at the words patch test and almost nobody knows what it involves. It takes minutes, and it is the reason we will not treat anyone off the back of a phone call.
Here is the whole thing. We treat a small area with a few pulses, at the settings we would actually use on you rather than a token low setting. Then we check how your skin responds over the following days.
That is it.
Why it matters is the important part. It is how suitability actually gets decided, on your skin, at your settings, per person. Not from a photo, not from a description over the phone, and not from an assumption about your skin type.
It also means you get to feel it before you commit to anything, which answers the question everybody is really asking.

It does depend, to be fair. On the area, on your hair, and on how many sessions it is realistically going to take. Anyone who quotes you a flat price down the phone without knowing any of that is guessing.
But "it depends" should not mean "come in and we will tell you then".

Most courses that disappoint people were not let down by the machine. They were let down by one of these three, and all three are avoidable.
Skipping sessions. The spacing is not a scheduling convenience, it is timed to catch follicles while they are in the growing phase. Leave it too long and you miss a cycle.
Plucking or waxing between sessions. Both remove the follicle the laser needs to target, so you turn up with nothing for it to work on. Shave instead, always.
Sun. Fresh sun exposure on the area means a session has to be put back, which quietly stretches a course across months more than it needed.
So: shave between sessions, never pluck, keep the area out of direct sun, and keep the spacing.

"Your skin tone is too dark for laser."
If someone has told you that, it is worth knowing where it came from. Older laser and IPL machines genuinely did struggle on deeper skin tones, because they could not reliably tell the pigment in the hair from the pigment in the skin. So a lot of people were turned away, and a lot of people have been carrying that answer around ever since.
That was a machine limitation. It was never a fault in your skin.

You are not shaving wrong. You are just shaving.
Ingrown hairs get blamed on technique, so people buy the exfoliating mitt, change the razor, switch to a different wax, and end up with the same sore bumps a week later.
Here is what is actually going on. Shaving cuts the hair at the surface. Waxing pulls it out. Either way it grows back through the same follicle, and when that regrowth curls sideways under the skin instead of coming through it, you get the raised bump, the redness, and often a darker mark that hangs around long after the bump itself has gone.
So the problem was never how you are removing the hair. It is that it keeps coming back.
Laser works on the follicle itself rather than the hair at the surface, which means there is less regrowth to get trapped in the first place. Most areas need a course of six to eight sessions, and results vary from person to person, which is exactly why we will not put a number on your skin from a post.
