Back to school = back to germs
So this week we're making a big batch of elderberry syrup (sú an tromáin) to keep in the fridge for the whole family.
I made a more complex version of this in my Irish Herbal Family First Aid class this week!
The elder tree has been part of Irish folk medicine for generations — it was even considered bad luck to cut one down without asking permission first, that's how protective our ancestors believed it to be. There's something grounding about leaning on that same plant wisdom now, in a house full of lunchboxes and early alarms.
What you need:
Dried elderberries
Echinacea
Water
Raw honey
Optional: A cinnamon stick
Simmer the berries gently until reduced, mash and strain through a cloth, let it cool completely, then stir in your honey (never boil honey — it kills the good stuff). Store in the fridge and take a spoonful daily, or at the first sign of a sniffle.
It's one of those simple recipes that gets passed down — my granny would have made something similar without ever calling it "elderberry syrup."
Just... what you did when someone got a cold.
Save this for your next home apothecary session.

Before the chemist, there was the hedge.
Bruised knee — a plantain leaf, chewed or crushed, pressed straight on.
Upset tummy — dandelion tea.
Cough coming on — elderberry, spoon by spoon.
Winters over — Spring tonic.
What did your granny or mother reach for? Tell me below — I love hearing these.
If you want to bring that knowledge back into your own home, join me 25th August for a hands-on family herbal first aid workshop. Link in bio.
This is what "family first aid" looks like in my kitchen — home made bruise balms for bumps & scraps plantain-infused oil for skin issues, elderberry syrup with Echinacea, honey, clove & cinnamon for immunity & building you up. Garlic infused oil for sore ears. A little patience, and a jars you'll reach for every time someone comes in with a scraped knee, bump or are heading back to school.
At the Natural Family Herbal First Aid workshop on 25th August, you'll make your own batch to take home, no chemist run.
