"দেবদত্তা"নামের আক্ষরিক অর্থ হলো "দেবতার দ্বারা প্রদত্ত উপহার" এবং হিন্দু পুরাণ অনুযায়ী এই নামে স্বর্গের একজন অত্যন্ত নিপুণ অপ্সরা ছিলেন।

ব্রহ্মা যখন নাট্য ও অভিনয়ের সৃষ্টি করেন, তখন শৃঙ্গার রসের উপযোগী কোমল ও লাবণ্যময় নৃত্যের (কৌশিকীনৃত্তি) জন্য একদল নারীর প্রয়োজন হয়ে পড়ে.ব্রহ্মা নিজের বিশেষ শক্তি দিয়ে একদল পরম সুন্দরী ও নৃত্যনিপুণ অপ্সরা সৃষ্টি করেন. ব্রহ্মা কর্তৃক বিশেষভাবে সৃষ্ট এই মূল অপ্সরাদের প্রথম সারির তালিকায় দেবদত্তা-র নাম অন্তর্ভুক্ত রয়েছে.তিনি দেবরাজ ইন্দ্রের দেবসভায় গন্ধর্বদের অপার্থিব সঙ্গীতের সাথে তাল মিলিয়ে নৃত্য পরিবেশন ও দেবতাদের বিনোদন দিতেন. অন্যান্য অপ্সরা-দের মতো দেবদত্তাও ছিলেন অসীম সৌন্দর্যের অধিকারী এবং নিজের ইচ্ছানুযায়ী রূপ পরিবর্তনে সক্ষম.

Whenever I used to read history books in my childhood, it was always the images and paintings that captivated me the most. I had read about Greek history long ago, yet those visuals have stayed with me ever since. The graceful depictions of the gods and goddesses of Athens, their attire, their aura — it all held a strange and beautiful attraction for me.
There was something so serene, so timeless about those women… a soft elegance that felt almost unreal. That is what I imagine when I think of an ancient Greek lady.
