Long before humanity captured an actual black hole image, scientists were already using Einstein’s equations to work out what one should look like.

In 1978, French astrophysicist Jean-Pierre Luminet produced one of the earliest scientifically accurate computer-generated visualizations of a black hole surrounded by a thin accretion disk. He performed the calculations using an IBM 7040 mainframe at the Paris-Meudon Observatory, feeding the computer instructions through punch cards.

But there was a problem: computers of that era couldn’t simply render the polished image we expect today.

The machine calculated the trajectories of light and the distribution of brightness around the black hole. Luminet then transformed those numerical results into an image by hand, drawing thousands of tiny dots with India ink on negative photographic paper. Areas predicted to be brighter received more densely packed dots.

The strange shape wasn’t artistic imagination. General relativity predicts that the black hole’s immense gravity bends light from the accretion disk, allowing an observer to see portions of the disk that would normally be hidden behind the black hole. The rotation of the material also makes one side appear dramatically brighter because of relativistic Doppler effects.

The calculation was completed in 1978, while the full technical work was published in Astronomy & Astrophysics in 1979.

What makes this remarkable is that it happened roughly four decades before the Event Horizon Telescope released humanity’s first direct image of a black hole’s shadow.

With punch cards, mathematics and a pen, scientists were already visualizing something no telescope had yet been able to show us.

FINAL WORD

Solomon did not write these warnings to create fear. He wrote them to create discernment. Because the wrong woman can quietly destroy a king from the inside out. Choose wisely.

A car dealer who had driven to Aga Khan Hospital to donate blood for his ailing sister was left devastated after thieves broke into his parked vehicle and stole over Sh2.5 million in cash.
Police say the victim, a Kizingo resident and owner of City Motors showroom on Moi Avenue, had collected the money as proceeds from motor vehicle sales over the previous two days and was carrying it in a bag inside his black Toyota Yaris.
He parked outside the hospital, and while inside attending to his sister, unknown assailants allegedly trailed him, smashed the rear right window of the car, and escaped with the cash.
Detectives suspect the suspects may have had prior information about the money and followed him from his workplace. Security footage from the hospital and nearby roads is currently being reviewed as investigations continue, with no arrests made so far.
