A black hole is a region of space from which no matter, not even light, can escape. It is the result of a very dense mass distorting space-time. A black hole is surrounded by an invisible surface called the event horizon, which marks the boundary of no return. Astronomers have identified a large number of possible locations for black holes, and have found evidence that supermassive black holes may exist at the centers of galaxies. In 1998, scientists found strong evidence that a supermassive black hole, weighing more than 4 million solar masses, exists in the Sagittarius A* region at the center of the Milky Way. The largest black holes in the universe are billions of solar masses in size and are called ultramassive black holes.
