The Fracture

Amara had always been proud of the life she and Tunde built together. Twelve years of marriage, two children, and a home filled with laughter—or at least it used to be. Lately, the air felt heavier, the laughter shorter, and the nights longer. Tunde was often “working late,” but the unease in Amara’s chest told her the truth was somewhere else.

One evening, she was folding laundry when his phone lit up on the table. A name appeared: “Nkechi ❤️.” Her hands froze mid-fold, the shirt slipping to the floor. She felt her heart race, yet her body went cold.

When he walked in, she didn’t hide the phone.
“Who is she, Tunde?” Amara’s voice trembled, but her eyes stayed firm.

He paused, his mouth opening and closing like a man caught without air. “Amara… it’s not what you think.”

Tears spilled, hot and unrelenting. “Then what is it? Because you don’t come home like you used to. You don’t talk to me like you used to. And now this?” She held up the glowing phone like evidence in a courtroom.

Tunde sank into a chair, his head in his hands. “I didn’t mean for this to happen. I was lonely, Amara. We’ve been so… distant.”

Her breath caught, anger sparking through the pain. “Lonely? I was here, Tunde! Every single day, carrying this family, praying for us, waiting for you. And you chose her?”

The silence stretched between them, thick as a wall.

Finally, Amara whispered, her voice breaking: “You didn’t just betray me—you betrayed us. The life we promised each other.”

Tunde reached out, but she stepped back. The fracture was already carved too deep.

That night, Amara sat by the window, watching dawn creep over the horizon. She didn’t know what tomorrow would bring—whether forgiveness or farewell—but she knew one thing: trust, once broken, could never return the same.
