The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered the immediate suspension of the Niger State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Suberu Aniviye, following the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in NSCDC custody in Minna.

The United States has approved a $24.3 billion sale of 48 F-35 stealth warplanes and related equipment to Saudi Arabia, the US State Department announced Thursday.

"The proposed sale will improve Saudi Arabia's capability to deter current and future threats by strengthening its homeland defense, and improving interoperability with US forces," the State Department said in a statement.

It "will also augment Saudi Arabia's operational aircraft and enhance its air-to-air, and air-to-ground self-defense capability," it added.

The State Department has notified Congress about the proposed sale, which would require the approval of US lawmakers.

The F-35 Lightning II fighter jet, built with stealth technology that allows it to evade enemy detection, is considered the world's most advanced fighter jet.

Saudi Arabia is pursuing ambitious economic and military modernization plans under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030.

The kingdom has sought to diversify its defense partnerships in recent years while maintaining its decades-long security relationship with Washington.

Nasir El-Rufai, a former Kaduna governor, has cried out over his prolonged detention as he marks 212 days since he was arrested and detained.



In a post on his official social media pages on Wednesday, Mr El-Rufai said, “Today Exactly 212 Days in Detention,” adding, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to Justice everywhere. Injustice anywhere is a threat to Democracy everywhere.”

A flyer featuring Mr El-Rufai dressed in a white suit, black shirt and white hat, posted on his page, read: “Detention must never become punishment before judgement. Due process is not privilege.”

Mr El-Rufai has remained in detention since February 18, following a probe by the anti-graft agency into alleged N432 billion money laundering based on a petition by the Kaduna State House of Assembly.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has said it is keeping the former Kaduna governor in detention based on a court remand order.
