WHY ARE WE GETTING 45 KOR IN AREAS WHERE WE EXPECT BEST QUALITY OF CASHEW (RCN 2026)?

Getting 45 KOR (Kernel Output Ratio) in an area where you normally expect high-quality cashew can happen for several reasons. Good quality Nigerian cashew usually ranges 48–52KOR, so 45 is slightly low but still marketable.

Here are the main reasons this can happen:

1. Immature Harvesting

If farmers pick the nuts too early before full maturity, the kernels inside will be smaller and lighter.
This reduces the KOR even if the nuts look good outside.

2. Poor Drying

If cashew nuts are not properly sun-dried, they retain moisture.
Moisture increases the weight of the shell but not the kernel, which lowers KOR.

3. Mixed Varieties

Sometimes bags contain different cashew varieties from nearby farms.
Some varieties naturally produce lower kernel yield.

4. Small Nut Count

If the nut count is high (meaning many nuts per kg), the nuts are small.
Smaller nuts usually produce lower KOR.

Example:
• 170–180 nuts/kg → usually lower KOR
• 150–160 nuts/kg → better KOR

5. Pest or Disease Damage

Insects or fungal attacks during the growing stage can cause shrivelled kernels, reducing output.

6. Old Stock

If the nuts were stored for too long or poorly stored, kernels may shrink or spoil internally, affecting KOR.

7. Adulteration

Sometimes suppliers mix light shells or inferior nuts inside bags to increase weight. This also reduces the kernel output.

✅ Quick tip for you as a buyer:
Always check three things together before buying cashew:
1. KOR
2. Nut Count
3. Moisture

Example of good export spec:
• KOR: 48–52
• Nut count: ≤ 180
• Moisture: ≤ 10%
