35 Million Voices Cannot Be Ignored!

Nigeria has taken a historic step toward true inclusion as the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) officially unveiled the Assumptive Disaggregated Data for Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria—a landmark document that finally begins to close the decades-long gap in disability data.

For years, policymakers, development partners, and advocates have worked in the dark without reliable statistics about Persons with Disabilities. Today, that narrative is changing.

Using projections from the National Population Commission and global disability benchmarks recognized by the United Nations, the report estimates that about 35 million Nigerians are Persons with Disabilities.

Think about that number.

35 million citizens.
35 million voters.
35 million lives that must be included in national planning.

Speaking at the unveiling, JONAPWD President Abdullahi A. Usman reminded the nation that without credible data, inclusion will always remain a promise instead of reality.

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the SSA to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Mohammed Abba Isa, described the database as a major milestone for inclusive governance, noting that data is the foundation of planning, policy formulation, and development.

The report also reveals critical insights:

• Physical disabilities represent the largest cluster with about 8.2 million people
• The Deaf community accounts for about 7.7 million Nigerians
• Men with disabilities: over 17.6 million
• Women with disabilities: about 17.2 million

The implications are enormous.

With credible data, government agencies like the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), development partners, and civil society can now design targeted policies, allocate resources fairly, and create programs that truly respond to the needs of Persons with Disabilities.

But beyond the numbers lies a deeper message:

Inclusion is not charity.
Inclusion is justice.
Inclusion is development.

This report is more than a document.
It is a call to action for governments, institutions, and society to build a Nigeria where accessibility, equal opportunity, and dignity are not optional—but guaranteed.

Because when 35 million Nigerians are included, the entire nation moves forward.

For those who think disability is infectious, this is the message—clear, firm, and human 👇🏽

Disability is not a disease. It is not contagious. You cannot “catch” disability by shaking hands, sharing space, sitting together, or showing love.

Disability is a part of human diversity. It can happen to anyone—through birth, illness, accident, aging, or conflict. What is truly harmful and contagious is ignorance, fear, and discrimination.

When you avoid a person because of disability, the problem is not their body—it is the misinformation you were taught. Education cures ignorance. Empathy cures fear. Inclusion builds a better society.

👉🏽 Stand close, not far away. Learn, not assume. Include, not exclude.
Because today it may be “them,” but tomorrow it could be anyone.

Let’s spread facts, kindness, and respect—not stigma.
