COCONUT OIL: MORE THAN JUST A COOKING OIL

Most people know coconut oil for cooking, but this simple oil has many other uses.

Coconut oil is made from mature coconut meat and contains lauric acid and other fats.

You can use it for: • Moisturizing dry skin
• Conditioning hair and reducing protein loss
• Cooking and baking
• Oil pulling as part of oral care
• Making products like lip balms and body scrubs

But how does coconut become oil?

Fresh coconut can be processed using the wet method, where coconut milk is extracted and the oil is separated.

It can also be dried into copra and mechanically pressed using the dry method.

THINK YOU KNOW COCONUT? THERE’S MORE TO THIS TROPICAL FRUIT THAN MEETS THE EYE!

Today, let’s take a closer look at the part many of us enjoy coconut flesh (meat).

The white flesh inside the shell contains fibre, healthy fats, and minerals such as manganese and copper. It also provides calories because of its fat content.

Young coconuts have soft, jelly-like flesh, while mature coconuts have thicker, firmer meat.

Coconut flesh can also be used to make coconut milk, cream, oil, flour, and dried shreds.

Coconut can be part of a balanced diet, but because it is relatively high in fat and calories, it’s best enjoyed in reasonable portions.

Did you know coconut flesh contains fibre?
