BE CAREFUL WHILE HELPING OTHERS

Kindness is beautiful.

Helping people is noble. But wisdom must always accompany kindness.

Many years ago, when I was still a junior staff member, there was a colleague I considered a friend. We had known each other since our NCE days and even graduated from the same college. When the time came for us to write a professional examination, I did everything within my power to help him.

I searched for information, guided him through the requirements, handled registration processes, and even traveled long distances to the board's office on his behalf.

I spent my time, energy, and resources without asking him for a single kobo. To me, he was a friend, and helping him felt like the right thing to do.

The examination came and went.
Then an opportunity arrived.

A promotion exercise was announced for junior officers who possessed the required qualifications. Excitedly, I submitted my application and looked forward to the process.

Little did I know that behind closed doors, a storm was gathering.

One morning, I was instructed to bring my personal file and the file of the same colleague to our superior officer's office. Since my department handled staff records, I thought nothing of it. I carried both files, dropped them on the table, greeted everyone present, and quietly left.

What I didn't know was that I was the topic of discussion.

Around that table sat several senior officers some even from my own hometown. They had gathered to argue that I was not qualified for the promotion exercise. Leading the opposition was the very colleague I had once helped.

The same person whose burden I had carried.

The same person whose registration I had facilitated.

The same person I had treated like a brother.

Together with others, he insisted that I should be disqualified.

That evening, I knew nothing.
I slept peacefully.
The next day, my immediate boss called me.

He looked at me, smiled, and said, "Yesterday, I was summoned because of you."

My heart skipped.
He continued, "Some people strongly argued that you were not qualified for the promotion examination.

They wanted your application stopped."

I sat silently.
Then he added something I will never forget:

"This your people you call brothers did not like you at all."

I asked him, "What happened after that?"
He smiled.

Our superior officer had simply opened my file.
One by one, he checked every requirement they claimed I lacked.

Everything was there.
Every document.
Every qualification.
Every approval.
Everything was complete.

Then came the shocking twist.
The same colleague they were defending could not provide some of the very requirements they accused me of lacking.

The room became silent.

The superior officer closed the files, looked at them, dismissed all their arguments, and sent them away.

Just like that.
That day, I learned one of life's most painful lessons:

Not everyone you help wants to see you succeed.

Some people will gladly accept your hand when they are down but will try to push you aside when it is your turn to rise.

Help people.

Support people.

Encourage people.

But never surrender your wisdom in the name of kindness.

A good heart should not mean a blind eye.

Continue to do good, but understand that gratitude is not guaranteed, loyalty is not automatic, and familiarity does not always produce sincerity.

Some people appreciate your help.

Others simply use it.
And when opportunity knocks on your door, you may discover who was truly standing beside you and who was merely standing near you.

"Not everyone who receives your help is praying for your success."

"Keep doing good, but keep your eyes open; some hands you lift today may try to pull you down tomorrow."

"The lesson is not to stop helping people. The lesson is to help wisely, trust carefully, and never ignore the signs that reveal a person's true character."

Be kind enough to help others, but be wise enough to know that kindness should never replace discernment.
