OWA CITY Forget million-dollar labs. Dasia Taylor, a 17-year-old high school senior, just proved the future of surgery might be sitting in your fridge.

Taylor invented surgical sutures that change color when infection strikes. The secret weapon? Beet juice. As a wound gets infected, its acidity drops. The beet-infused thread detects this shift and changes color—an early warning system stitched right into the skin.

📊 Why This Matters:
The WHO reports 11% of surgical wounds in low-income countries become infected over triple the U.S. rate. Taylor designed this specifically for patients who can't afford fancy "smart" tech.
