🌡️🦟 El Niño is more than a weather story. It can become a health story.
WHO has warned that El Niño can influence public-health risks globally, including extreme heat, flooding, vector-borne diseases and food insecurity.
For Pakistan, the key question is: what could changing weather conditions mean locally?
🦟 Dengue & malaria: Changes in temperature and rainfall can alter mosquito breeding and transmission.
🌡️ Extreme heat: Higher temperatures can increase heat-related illness.
🌊 Flooding: Heavy rainfall can increase displacement and waterborne-disease risks.
🥣 Malnutrition: Climate shocks can disrupt crops, food supplies and household nutrition.
⚠️ Important context: This is not a forecast that Pakistan will experience all of these impacts. WHO’s assessment is global. Pakistan’s actual risk will depend on local weather patterns, mosquito surveillance, disease trends and food-security conditions.

🦟 Dengue cases are rising in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
KP has recorded 148 dengue cases in just one week, the highest weekly total reported this year.
📍 Kohat: 60 cases
📍 Peshawar: 38 cases
📍 Abbottabad: 24 cases
Health authorities have intensified surveillance, mosquito-control measures and public awareness, with a rapid-response team deployed to Kohat.
This does not mean Pakistan is facing a nationwide dengue epidemic. But a sharp weekly rise across multiple districts is an important warning sign, especially after the monsoon when mosquito breeding conditions can increase transmission.

🚭 Smoking doesn’t just affect your lungs. It can affect your fertility too.
According to WHO, around 1 in 6 people experience infertility during their lifetime. To***co use is one preventable factor that can harm reproductive health.
In men, smoking is associated with poorer s***m count, movement and quality. In women, it can negatively affect ovarian function and fertility and is associated with pregnancy complications.
The encouraging part? Quitting to***co is one meaningful step toward protecting your reproductive and overall health. ❤️

🦟 14 chikungunya cases have been confirmed in Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, highlighting the need for stronger mosquito control and public awareness.
Chikungunya and dengue are both spread mainly by Aedes mosquitoes, but they are different viral infections.
🔴 Dengue can become severe and may lead to bleeding, shock or other serious complications.
🔵 Chikungunya is particularly known for intense joint pain, which can sometimes persist for weeks or months.
Because early symptoms can overlap, don’t self-diagnose based on symptoms alone. If you develop fever, rash, significant joint pain, unusual bleeding, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or worsening weakness, seek medical assessment.
The Nowshera cases are a localised cluster and should not be interpreted as evidence of a nationwide chikungunya outbreak.
💧 Remove stagnant water.
🦟 Use mosquito repellent and screens/nets.
👕 Wear clothing that reduces mosquito exposure.
Same mosquito threat. Different diseases. Prevention matters for both.

🦠 Measles can come back when vaccination rates fall.
A reported infant death linked to measles in Pennsylvania is a sobering reminder that measles is not a harmless childhood infection. It is extremely contagious and can cause serious complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis and, in rare cases, death.
💉 The good news: measles is highly preventable through vaccination. When vaccination coverage drops, immunity gaps allow the virus to spread again.
🇵🇰 For Pakistan, the lesson matters too. Strengthening routine childhood immunisation and closing local coverage gaps are essential to preventing outbreaks.
One death alone does not establish a broader trend, but it reminds us why prevention cannot become invisible simply because it works.
Vaccination saves lives. Let’s not go backwards.

🚨 Rs5 MILLION COMPENSATION FOR EACH PIMS FAMILY, BUT QUESTIONS REMAIN.
The government has announced Rs5 million in compensation for each family that lost a newborn in the PIMS nursery fire.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has described the tragedy as a case of “criminal negligence,” while Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal has pledged accountability.
However, an important distinction remains: criminal negligence has not yet been established by a judicial finding. The inquiry must determine what went wrong and who was responsible.
The bigger questions now are: Were safety risks known before the tragedy? Were previous warnings ignored? Were emergency exits, staffing, electrical systems and oxygen safety adequate?
Compensation may support grieving families. Accountability and prevention must ensure this never happens again.
