Dementia and Alzheimer's often get used as if they're the same word. They're not.

Dementia is the umbrella term — it describes a set of symptoms affecting memory, thinking and everyday functioning. Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia, but it isn't the only one.

Why does the distinction matter? Because when we're only watching for "the Alzheimer's version" of memory loss, we can miss other, quieter changes worth paying attention to — not to diagnose, but to notice.

If someone you love seems different from their usual self — getting lost somewhere familiar, repeatedly asking the same thing, struggling with tasks they'd normally manage easily — it doesn't mean they have Alzheimer's. But it's worth finding out what's going on. Earlier answers can mean earlier support.
