DYE ON BARK (1)

Since 2023, barkcloth from Uganda has become an increasingly important material in my artistic practice through my wider MUTUBA interdisciplinary creative and performance research.

Dye on Bark is a new direction within this journey.

For the past month, I have been experimenting with natural dyes made from plant roots and leaves, using boiling, sewing, sun-drying and burning to transform the bark.

I approached the process as choreography by allowing the material and colours to compose intuitive patterns, then using the resulting image as prompt for movement interpretation.

Traditional shaping contemporary expression.

Grateful to for hosting their Uganda placement, and to for producing the work, and warmly welcoming them into the creation.

Feeling deeply grateful for all the incredible creatives and voices who have fed into Mutuba – my interdisciplinary creative and performance research project.

The audience shared how captivated they were by the cohesive and innovative blend of Dance, Film, and Visual Art – including artefacts and photography.

It’s been a rich and meaningful collaboration that allowed them to connect with broader themes such as sustainability, cultural heritage, and ecology, while also drawing out emotions of vulnerability and resilience.

Thank you for being part of this journey.
