The Hidden History of Winfield Mounds 10/13/2026

More from the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, in honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day:
“…James Jennings of Wheaton College chanced upon evidence of an indigenous settlement on a walk along the river.
“After obtaining a research permit from the Forest Preserve District, he and his team of archaeology students from Wheaton College conducted several digs near the river and of the mounds and reclaimed over 2,000 settlement artifacts, including pottery sherds, stone tools, and arrowheads, some of which are still being studied by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
“Although archaeology broadens our understanding of cultural history, this practice is unintentionally destructive and, along with vandalism, left its scars upon Winfield Mounds. A decade after Jennings’ team concluded, Doug Kullen of the University of Chicago resumed the research and published a comprehensive report on the excavations, recommending the restoration of the disfigured mounds….”

Winfield Mounds in West Chicago 10/13/2026

In honor of Indigenous Peoples Day. From Atlas Obscura:
‘The Winfield Mounds were crafted by Native Americans who lived along the West Branch of the DuPage River…. This happens to be the only documented prehistoric burial/effigy site in DuPage County. Unfortunately, vandals dug up the mounds during the early 20th-century, and years later, research-oriented digs by the University of Chicago and Wheaton College removed all artifacts and permanently damaged the mounds. In 1998, volunteers reconstructed three low round mounds to mark the historically significant Winfield Mounds site, while also constructing a trail and interpretive signs to educate visitors….’

More than 50 newsrooms later, her photographs document the effects of years of cutbacks, as well as the journalists still working to keep local news alive.

“…the heron was found with fishing line entangled around the beak and wrapped around the wing (this is a great time to remind all anglers to clean up after yourself and others!). During the intake exam, we noted this bird was banded with a USGS band, and a search of our database confirmed that it was in fact us that banded this bird only two months earlier….”
