I’d measure, mix, panic about getting the ratios right, and wonder why my soil still felt like lifeless dust by mid-August. About twenty years ago, I stopped buying them completely. It turns out, what goes on underground is far more important than what happens above it. When you actually feed the dirt, the plants mostly just get on with growing. These days, I rely on a small handful of completely natural soil feeders. A couple of them you can make quietly in your backyard for free. One sounds slightly medieval but does wonders for root systems, and another is something I practically stumbled on that completely changed how my beds hold moisture.
