We are Mokenchi (Mokey & Kenchi), husband and wife married for 4 years and expecting our first baby in December! Join us on our life's adventures!
We got into this business as hobby at first. Then in August 2013 Mokey became allergic to sulfates (a chemical commonly used in detergents and other washing products ex. shampoo, face wash, baby wash, etc.). Of course, we had to get rid of almost all of the products we were using and start from scratch. As we began to shop around we realized that most products that were sulfate-free were a bit out
side of our budget. On top of that, Kenchi has a genetic skin condition called Erythrokeratodermia which makes his skin very sensitive as well. Since Mokey's allergic reaction was quite severe, we had to find a solution. Good thing for us though, Mokey already had prior knowledge of a few at-home remedies she could use. At this point, it occurred to use that we did not necessarily need to buy everything from a store. We had become so accustomed to buying prepackaged products. Now we do a lot more diy and actually save a ton of money that we can use elsewhere in our budget. We were so excited that we have to share our story with everyone who will listen and wants to save some money. We were able to apply this principal to many other aspects of our lives as well. For instance, going to the gym. Our health and fitness have always been important to us so we always kept a gym membership. Then we realized, wait a minute, we can exercise at home. Not going to the gym saved us $80/month (you can do the math on the yearly savings). We cook at home more and eat out less which saves us about $50 a week on average. No more relaxers for Mokey, saving us about $100 every few months not to mention add-on services. One thing we are not is holistic. Some things we buy organic but some things we do not. There is a fine balance of both worlds that we maintain, therefore, we consider ourselves semi-holistic if you want to put a label on us but we are just Mokenchi! The Mokenchi Spending Guide
1) Don't spend money if you can get it for free
2) Don't spend money if you can get your spouse (or someone else) to buy it for you
3) Don't spend money if the item is not on sale
4) Know the price of the target item because some companies mark-up sale prices
5) Buy bulk when items are on sale if it is something you use often
6) DIY is your bestfriend
7) Do not spend money if you can do/mix/put together/etc. yourself
8) Do not be afraid to spend money if the product is worth it
9) Do not be afraid to spend money when it is the prime time to buy
10) Every penny counts, keep the coinage and count/roll it by hand
11) Re-purpose things. For example, toothbrushes make great facial exfoliaters and edge control tamers for hair. In addition, Mokey keeps her nail polishes in an old camera bag and she keeps some of her less worn, old purses to use as lunchboxes, etc. If you can think of any other money saving strategies, please tell us!
