There are many misconceptions about acne. Understanding how skin actually functions is key to separating habit from science.

Here's a quick list of top acne myths to help you avoid treatment detours and find out what works.

Myth: Spot treating is the best way to clear a pimple quickly
When you spot treat only the individual lesion, you allow bacteria in the surrounding skin to continue to grow and spread. To really clear your skin, you need to address the underlying condition, and that means using your skincare product all over your face.

Myth: Chocolate and greasy foods cause acne.
In a landmark study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1969, Dr. Fulton debunked the widely held myth that chocolate and greasy foods were the cause of acne. Still, the idea persists. While a good diet is essential to maintaining healthy skin, acne begins in the pore.

Myth: Dirty skin and hair on the forehead cause acne.
This myth often leads to over-scrubbing, which can irritate skin and make acne worse. While cleansing helps keep pores clear, acne isn’t caused by dirty skin or oil from your hair. It develops beneath the surface due to inflammation, bacteria, and excess sebum within the pore. If you’re predisposed to acne, oil and friction from hair may worsen breakouts — but they are not the root cause.
