Simple Sundries is officially 6 years old! I am very proud of starting Simple Sundries, of building it, growing it, and of navigating the ever-evolving challenges that were thrown at it.

But it's time to close it. The unpredictable tariffs, economic uncertainty, declining legislative support for sustainability, and the shift from empowerment to apathy in consumer sentiment is just too overwhelming.

So here is the calendar for winding down the store:
Farmers Markets! Simple Sundries will still set up at all previously committed farmers markets. September means every Saturday at Ankeny and every Tuesday in Johnston.

Online shopping: The online store will continue until October 15th at which point the site will go down.

Online sales:
20% everything September 17h-24th
30% off everything September 25th-October 1st
40% off- October 2nd-October 8th
50% off- October 19th-15th

Plus additional sales on certain items! So if there's something you really want, stock up now to ensure it's available. World in $1.5tn ‘plastics crisis’ hitting health from infancy to old age, report warns Plastic production has increased more than 200 times since 1950 and hits health at every stage from extraction to disposal, says review in the Lancet

A new study in medical journal The Lancet estimates that global plastic pollution is responsible for health-related economic losses exceeding $1.5 trillion annually. Researchers found the principal driver of the growing public health crisis is a huge increase in global plastic production — from 2 million tons in 1950 to a projected 1.2 billion tons by 2060. "Plastics are a grave, growing, and under-recognized danger to human and planetary health," the report's authors write. Less than 10% of plastic is recycled.

We cannot donate our way out of our global waste problem. This is just one shelf of one thrift store in one town. Buy your water bottles and coffee mugs used. And get one you know you’ll use and will keep using until it’s no longer usable. Don’t buy new ones. Don’t take free ones you won’t use. Of course you should have reusables. But they only cut waste if you keep reusing them & reusing them & reusing them. With the understanding that if you donate them, they might just sit on a shelf for a couple weeks before they get thrown away because they aren’t selling. 💚🌍✌️

It was a beautiful night at the Beaverdale Farmers Market!

I got to pet lots of cute dogs, smile at lots of cute kids and have great conversations with people in the neighborhood who were eager to cut down waste in their homes and simplify their lives.

I’d say about 40% of our products originate from non-US countries because no one in the USA makes them. If they did, I’d source my products from them. All sustainable stores would rather buy American and always have. But many sustainable products are just not made here.

So yeah. Here we are.

Summer is just around the corner, which means we are approaching farmer’s market season! Hooray for fresh veggies and locally farmed meat & cheeses.
