Most people assume pregnancy requires open fallopian tubes, but gestational surrogacy works differently the embryo, created using intended parents’ or donor’s genetics, is transferred directly into the uterus, bypassing the tubes entirely. It’s why a tubal ligation has no bearing on whether someone can carry as a gestational surrogate. Amy’s kids grew up understanding the basics too she explained her role using a “kangaroo” story, long before they needed the medical version.

Every woman who gives birth goes through this. Her body changes, her identity shifts, and she has to figure out who she is on the other side of it that part isn’t unique to any one kind of mother.

For a gestational surrogate, it happens with an extra layer most people don’t think about. She recovers from the same birth, the same hormone crash, the same physical reset while also stepping back from a baby she carried but isn’t raising. Creating herself again means something specific for her: rebuilding her sense of self without the day-to-day identity a newborn usually gives a postpartum mother.

That’s not a smaller version of postpartum. It’s a different shape of the same thing.

What’s one part of postpartum recovery nobody prepared you for?

Caring for someone else’s whole family starts before the pregnancy does, it starts with knowing your own worth well enough to ask what you’re worth, too. Compensation is only part of that. The rest is a team that checks in without being asked, a partner who treats this as something you’re doing together, and a version of yourself that gets more confident with every appointment, not less.
