It depends on how you use it
Living and working in California, I meet a lot of clients who use ma*****na in one form or another. Some use CBD oil, some use THC products, and many tell me they smoke cannabis every day.
One question comes up again and again:
"Does ma*****na help my body... or is it making things worse?"
After more than twenty years working as a massage therapist, I've seen both sides.
And that's why my answer is always the same:
👉 It depends on how you use it.
Like many things in life, cannabis can be a helpful tool when it's used responsibly.
But if it begins controlling your life instead of helping it, that's where problems can start.
I've worked with clients who use cannabis occasionally before a massage. Some tell me it helps them relax, breathe easier, and let go of tension. For those people, the session sometimes feels calmer because they're less guarded and more comfortable.
But I've also worked with many clients who use ma*****na every day for years.
Some of them tell me they started because it helped with stress.
Then they noticed something changing.
Instead of feeling calmer, they began feeling more anxious.
More emotionally reactive.
More dependent on using it just to feel "normal."
Some struggled with motivation.
Others eventually needed medication for anxiety or depression.
I'm not saying ma*****na caused all of those problems. Life is much more complicated than that. Stress, genetics, sleep, work, relationships, and overall health all play a role.
But as a therapist, I pay attention to patterns.
And I've noticed that some long-term, heavy users often seem to have a harder time relaxing their nervous system naturally.
I've also experienced this personally.
There was a time in my life when I smoked ma*****na much more often than I do now.
Today, I use it very rarely.
When I cut back, I noticed positive changes in my own energy, focus, and daily routine.
I also realized something else.
When I stopped after using it regularly, I experienced withdrawal symptoms.
For me, that was a reminder that anything affecting the brain can become something we rely on.
That's why I believe it's important to be honest with ourselves.
Ask yourself:
Am I choosing to use it?
Or do I feel like I need it every day just to function?
Those are two very different situations.
As massage therapists, our goal isn't to judge our clients.
Our goal is to understand them.
If someone uses cannabis occasionally and feels it helps them, that's a conversation worth having.
If someone feels they can't get through the day without it, that's also a conversation worth having.
Balance is the key.
And if you're considering cannabis for pain, sleep, appetite, or another health concern, talk with your physician or another qualified healthcare professional. Every person responds differently, and what's helpful for one individual may not be appropriate for another.
From everything I've seen over the years, my biggest lesson is simple:
Nothing is completely good.
Nothing is completely bad.
It's how we use it that often makes the difference.
Use any tool with respect.
Don't let the tool begin controlling you.
I'd love to hear your experience.
Have you noticed cannabis helping your recovery?
Or have you noticed it creating challenges over time?
Let's have an honest discussion and learn from each other's experiences.

One of the biggest mistakes I see new massage therapists make is believing that great hands are enough to build a successful career.
They're not.
When you graduate from massage school, you know anatomy. You know techniques. You know how to perform a massage.ey walk through your door until they become a loyal customer for years.
That changed everything for me.
Over the years, I developed a simple five-step system that helped me become more organized, more professional, and, most importantly, achieve better results for my clients.
Every successful session should follow a plan.
Not just a massage.
Step 1 – Intake
Everything begins with a conversation.
Before your hands touch the client, ask questions.
Listen carefully.
What hurts?
How long has it been bothering them?
What makes it better?
What makes it worse?
Have they had injuries or surgeries?
What do they do for work?
How do they sleep?
How active are they?
The more you learn, the better your treatment becomes.
People don't just want a massage.
They want someone who truly understands them.
Step 2 – Assessment
Don't guess.
Assess.
Observe posture.
Watch how they move.
Check mobility.
Look for asymmetries.
Identify where the body is compensating.
The painful area isn't always the real problem.
Sometimes shoulder pain begins at the thoracic spine.
Sometimes knee pain starts at the hip.
Sometimes neck pain begins with breathing habits or posture.
The assessment gives you direction.
Step 3 – Treatment
Now it's time to do what you do best.
Apply the right techniques.
Not every client needs deep tissue.
Not every client needs stretching.
Choose the treatment based on your assessment—not your favorite technique.
Be present.
Feel the tissue.
Communicate.
Work with the client's breathing.
Your goal isn't to impress them with strength.
Your goal is to help them move and feel better.
Step 4 – Reassessment
This is the step many therapists skip.
After the treatment, reassess.
Check the same movement you tested before.
Ask the client how they feel.
Has the pain changed?
Has the range of motion improved?
Did posture improve?
This is where both you and your client see the value of your work.
You're not guessing anymore.
You're measuring progress.
Step 5 – Create Plan
But nobody really teaches you how to manage a client from the moment
One massage rarely solves a long-standing problem.
Create a roadmap.
Explain what you found.
Recommend the next session if appropriate.
Suggest simple home care that fits within your training and scope of practice.
Set realistic expectations.
People appreciate honesty.
When clients understand the plan, they're much more likely to stay committed and achieve lasting results.
These five steps changed my practice.
They made me more confident.
My clients trusted me more.
My results improved.
And naturally, my business grew.
Because clients don't return just because you gave a good massage.
They return because they believe you have a plan to help them.
That's the difference between simply giving massages and building a professional practice.
