Artist Heather Johnson’s Upcoming Exhibitions
Drawing:
Brio Memory Project Drawing no. 10: Fighters
Watercolor and ink on handmade, seeded paper, 2024
From Heather:
It is fall at last. Cool temperatures are 24 hours away (yes, we count the minutes here in Houston, when it’s 96 degrees in mid-October). And I am proud to announce that I’m in 3 exhibitions now on view - the culmination of a year of research, discoveries, conversations and collaborations, evolving into a project now in fruition I plan on developing into the future.
The Brio Memory Project: Extraction, Erasure and the Power of Remembering disseminates drawings, personal stories, performance, video, and interactive installations to address cultural amnesia and community trauma associated with industrial pollution in Houston, Texas. It invites viewers to contribute their own stories - of suffering, survival, grief, resiliency, anger, joy or any combination thereof - with the goal of uniting voices that collectively portray an under-represented side of Houston’s history. Look for a future iteration next spring at Throughline Collective, March 28 - April 26, 2025!

14 national artists respond to environmental crises and climate change, in an exhibition inspired by the history of environmental activism related to river fires across the nation — events that have shaped understandings of ecological preservation and environmental advocacy.
I am proud to present two major works in this show, as part of Texas Biennial 2024.

ARTIST TALK AND EXHIBITION TOUR
Saturday, October 19, 2-3:30pm
The members of Throughline respond to sites within Houston and the greater Gulf Coast to address how what we see can summon the invisible, such as diasporic memory, repressed histories and the mystical. The work embraces complexities beyond borders, explores boundaries between nature and culture, and pushes against the edges of outdated systems. Curated by JR Roykovich.

A FINAL WORD ABOUT
THE BRIO MEMORY PROJECT
BMP Drawing no. 11: Little Leaguer (2)
Landscape intervention with ink and watercolor on handmade paper embedded with native seeds, 2024.
Now that BMP stations are up in spaces around Houston, the project’s objective is represent a broader range of experiences from those who have undergone the physical and emotional affects of industrial pollution at sites across town, from Kashmere Gardens, to Baytown, Pasadena, Alief, Crosby, Cypress and other areas. If you live or work near a Houston Superfund site, close to a chemical processing facility, or believe you are subjected to toxins generated by present or past industries, please get in touch, as I would love to hear your story and include your voice. If you would like to participate, contact me or click the story submission link on the project page button, where you can also learn about the project’s background, my process and view current videos.
