Sad news for racing fans today, with the passing of former jockey Graham Bradley.

Bradley was a top-class rider on the biggest National Hunt stages, winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1983, the Irish Grand National in 1985, the Champion Hurdle in 1996 and the Hennessy Gold Cup in 1997.

Grand National fans will also remember him for his fine ride on Suny Bay in 1998, when the grey finished second behind Earth Summit at Aintree.

One of the great stories from his career came in 1985, when Bradley won the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse on Rhyme 'n' Reason. It was his first ride in Ireland, and he came away with one of the country’s biggest prizes.

A brave, gifted and hugely memorable jockey.

Rest in peace, Graham Bradley.

Back on the track of his greatest triumphs, Sovereignty came up short in the Stephen Foster Stakes. Trainer Bill Mott explained that jockey Junior Alvarado said the field simply got away from Sovereignty on the backstretch, rather than seeing the c**t advance under his own explosive power — the trait that defined his 2025 campaign. Urged on into the second turn, Sovereignty reached contention but couldn't sustain the bid.
Mott didn't sugarcoat it: "I thought he'd finish better than that."
Magnitude took the spoils in front-running fashion, and now heads toward the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland as one of the division's hottest names.
Sometimes even greatness needs to wait for its moment.
