I didn’t start making soap to start a business.

I started because I was curious. I wanted to learn what went into the products I was using, where ingredients came from, and how everything actually worked.

A little curiosity turned into a soapmaking class, then one batch, then another… and eventually, a business. 😊

Along the way, I earned my Basic and Advanced Soapmaking Certifications through the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild (HSCG), continuing to build my knowledge of the craft.

Today, understanding ingredients, sourcing, formulation, and the science behind what I make is still a big part of why I do what I do.

I shared a little more about how Preserving My Sanity got started, why ingredients matter to me, and why I think understanding the products we use is worth the time.

Someone asked me at a show recently if I had any natural deodorant.

My answer was, “No, I use Little Seed Farm deodorant and probably always will.” 😂

Years ago, when I started looking for ways to reduce the products I used with ingredients I didn’t love, I tried a lot of natural deodorants. Little Seed Farm was the first that actually worked for me, and I’ve been buying multiple jars at a time ever since.

So no, I don’t plan to start making deodorant myself. But, I am excited to offer one of my favorite brands in my shop! ❤️

Little Seed Farm Cream Deodorant is made with simple, nourishing ingredients and doesn't contain aluminum or baking soda. It comes in a 2.4 oz glass jar with a recyclable metal lid, and each jar includes a small wooden stick applicator.

So the next time you’re stocking up on goat milk soap, lotion, and other goodies, you can grab your deodorant while you’re here, too. 😊

Available at PreservingMySanity.com.

My latest Destination Series soap takes us to South Dakota! 🌽

I grew up in South Dakota, and a friend of mine always threw a big summer bash during our college years called the “Corn Feed.” I also have plenty of memories of eating fresh corn on the cob as a kid.

Corn isn’t unique to South Dakota, but if you’re from the Midwest, you know what happens when sweet corn starts showing up on the side of the road. You stop. And you don’t just buy a couple ears, because it’s sold by the dozen. You eat some, eat some more, freeze some, and then do it all over again the next time you see it. 😂

So when I started thinking about inspiration for a South Dakota soap, sweet corn was an obvious choice.

I had read that dehydrated corn silk could be dissolved into the lye mixture, so naturally, I had to try it. Making soap with milk can make things behave a little differently, but with the help of my immersion blender, it came together into a super smooth, creamy soap that has corn silk dissolved right in the bar.

Of course, it had to be yellow. And I found a fresh, slightly corny (hee hee) fragrance from one of my trusted suppliers to go with it. I slightly reformulated my regular recipe to include a bit of ghee, too - because we all know you can't have sweet corn without butter.

I’m sending a bar to my friend as a surprise, but the rest are available in my shop now! 🌽

If you’re a vacation rental owner or host, I’d love to help you create a custom soap inspired by what makes your location special — something your guests will remember long after their stay. 💁‍♀️

🌟 Celebrating Women in Small Business Month! 🌟

Today we’re excited to spotlight another talented local woman who turned a personal favorite into a creative small business – Darcy Geho with Preserving My Sanity!🧼🐐💕

As someone with sensitive skin, Darcy had used goat milk soap for years. About four years ago, her love of learning inspired her to take a soapmaking class—and she was hooked! One thing led to another, and before long Darcy was creating a variety of handcrafted soaps, lotions, and bath & body products for her online shop.

Darcy also owns a marketing business, so after spending plenty of time behind a computer, soapmaking provides the perfect creative outlet. She gets to step away from the screen and create products that are both beautiful and functional. ✨

🐐 Her goat milk soap and lotion are made with milk sourced locally right here in Murray County! She also offers other bath & body products, accessories, and gifts.

🎺 Fun fact: During college, Darcy spent a season marching with the Pride of the Dakotas at South Dakota State University!

🛍️ Want to shop local and support her business? Visit PreservingMySanity.com and choose free local pickup at checkout. You can also find her products at The Corner Market in Tyler and Merch & Co. in Edgerton. Plus, watch for her at the Fulda Holiday Bazaar in November!

❤️ During Women in Small Business Month, we encourage you to shop small, support local, and celebrate the women whose creativity and hard work make our communities even better!

It’s Blue Tuesday at Little Blue Market! 💙

I love being part of a marketplace that makes it easier to find and support small businesses that are trying to make a difference. There are so many thoughtful products and wonderful people behind these businesses, and I’m happy to be one of them.

With the holidays coming up, it’s also a good reminder that we don’t have to wait until December to start shopping. Shopping small and early can make a real difference to the people behind the businesses you’re supporting.

So if you’re shopping for something special or starting your holiday list early, visit Little Blue Market and see what you can find. 🎁
