🐉 As Dragonfly Season Draws to a Close…

As we reach the end of September, another fantastic dragonfly and damselfly season at RSPB Old Moor is coming to a close.

We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has sent us photographs, reported sightings and helped us keep track of these incredible insects throughout the season. 📸

It's been a particularly interesting year. Every species has appeared around a week earlier than we would normally expect, with one remarkable exception — the Banded Demoiselle, which was an incredible whole month early!

And there was another very exciting milestone this year. Towards the end of June, we recorded our first Norfolk Hawkers at RSPB Old Moor — a fantastic addition to the reserve's dragonfly records and certainly one of the highlights of the season.

Records like these are incredibly valuable, helping us build a picture of how our wildlife is changing from year to year.

A very special thank you must go to David Pritchard for his continued support. David has put a huge amount of time into recording and photographing our dragonflies and damselflies, as well as sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm through our Dragonfly events here at Old Moor.

Thank you, David — and thank you to everyone who has contributed a sighting or photograph this year. 💚

There may still be the odd Common Darter or Migrant Hawker hanging on if we get some warm autumn sunshine, but for most of our dragonflies, it's time to wait out the winter until they emerge again next spring.

Here's to another fantastic dragonfly season next year! 🐉🌿

No one wished me on my birthday tomorrow👇 because I don't look good👇😢
