Life is Soap

ASH WEDNESDAY
I got ashes today, not so much as a sign of what I believe, but more so as a memory of where I’ve been.
I find recently I’ve come loose in places, so lately, I’ve been stitching myself back together with pieces and patches of my past.

Memory can mend.
Ritual can heal.

So when my mom got ashes today, I got them too.

During lent, we use outward expression to turn inward. Ashes are a sacramental reminder that we return to origin - always. We return to begin anew.

So, why not get ashes? Seems appropriate with all my soul-mending lately. Plus, getting ashes really made my mom happy - and I’m not sure what was more beautiful, the significance of the ash, or the smile on my mom’s face.

So, I got ashes today, not so much as a sign of what I believe, but more so as a reminder of the guy I want to be.

Whatever the season, whatever the reason do it for love.

THE POOL IS NOT THE BLESSING

When I close the pool for the season, people ask, “Why keep the pool open? You don’t use it often.”

Well, I keep the pool open because it is a dream I had as a child, and a reality I achieved as an adult. It is a literal bucket on the proverbial list.

But more so, I keep the pool open because it is the pool my father sat around, and when it is still, I see his reflection; it is the pool my brother bellyflopped into, and when it splashes, I hear laughter once lived.; it is the pool my young nieces and nephews swim in, and amongst that frolic, I feel hope for the future. And, It is the pool in which my mother refuses to dip her feet, from fear she might fall in and drown.

All of these , reflection and laughter, hope and fear, remind me that life is a series of choices, manifested seasonally, but made daily.

I keep the pool open because it is a reservoir of blessings. The pool, itself, is not a blessing, but it helps me experience, share, remember and honor the blessings I do have.

So, when people ask, I just smile.

But, if you want to know, I keep the pool open for me. I rarely venture in, but it always keeps me afloat.
