Tips on how to take better moon pictures ⬇️

1.) Use a long lens
I’m talking 200mm and longer. Of course, your composition will dictate your final focal length, but the longer the lens, the more compression you will have and the closer and bigger the moon will appear.

2.) Use a sturdy tripod
After spending hours planning, traveling, and getting ready for the moon alignment, the worst thing that can happen is if your moon shot turns out blurry. Do yourself a favor and get a sturdy tripod with either an amazing ball head or a heavy duty 3-way geared head (highly recommend!)

3.) Use an intervalometer
Using your cameras internal 2 second delay can work in a pinch, but I highly recommend you get an intervalometer instead. Sometimes those 2 second delay can be the difference between a perfect alignment and one that is just slightly off.

4.) Choose the correct day
I planning my full moon alignments for the day before the full moon, the day of the full moon, and one day after. I try to have 6 plans (moon rise and set on each of the 3 days) to hopefully have at least one day work out. For crescent moons, the best day is usually 2 days before the new moon for the moon rise, and 2 days after the new moon for a moon set. That is because the rise/set will be during the late parts of bluehour when there is enough light to not fully blow out the moon or way underexpose your scene.

5.) Shoot bracketed exposures
Especially during crescent moon alignments and moon rises after the full moon, it’s going to be nearly impossible to correctly expose your image. Bracketing is a super easy process of taking multiple pictures in a sequence at different exposure levels. For the best moon photography results, I noticed taking 3 brackets works perfectly. My most underexposed photo starts at -3 EV, then -1.7 EV and the last is at -0.3 EV. After blending the photos in Lightroom, both your moon and the rest of the scene will be properly exposed.
