As a lifelong resident of this community, born and raised here, I’ve always felt a deep connection to this place. On a day like today, I usually stay home, reflecting quietly. But today, for the first time, my career has brought me back to work so close to the 9/11 Memorial, on a day that holds so much meaning for all of us.

I can’t help but think back to the terrified 11-year-old girl I was, sitting in 6th grade math class, watching in disbelief as our world changed forever. Even though I wasn’t directly affected like so many around me, I prayed that no one I loved was hurt. I’ll never forget the moment my mother came to get me, rushing me home just a block away from school. We were told to keep the windows closed, but how could we, when we could see people walking past, covered in white, grey, and blood-stained dust, in absolute shock? It felt impossible to just sit there and not try to help.

A few days later, I volunteered at our local church, St. James, and I remember the moment my cousin walked through those church basement doors. He was wearing a mask, but I knew it was him. I ran straight into his arms, overwhelmed with relief. He had just started his career with the NYPD, and we hadn’t heard from him in weeks. That memory stays with me always.

Today, my career has brought me full circle. I now supervise some of the very people who were on the front lines when 9/11 happened, those who were working at Millennium Hotel or at The Marriott that once stood between the towers. They were younger then, some of them so close to the heart of the tragedy, and today, like every year, will be incredibly difficult for them. They, like all of us, are human beings with memories, emotions, and wounds that never fully heal.

So, as we go about our day, my hope is that we all show kindness to those we meet, no matter how they may react. We never truly know how someone is processing their feelings, their memories, their grief—especially on this day, 9/11.

The photos I took last night, 9/10/24, represent a personal milestone for me. It’s the first time since the memorial lights were installed that I’ve had the courage and peace of mind to get close to the site on this date. Typically, I only see the lights from South Street Seaport or through my window.
