We’re honored to have been selected as a New York Fashion Innovation Center (NYFIC) Grant Awardee.
This grant marks an exciting next chapter for MushLume: developing and testing a new mycelium-based acoustic wall system using h**p, New York agricultural byproducts, and regenerative wool.
Over the coming year, we’ll be exploring how these regional, renewable materials can work together to create high-performance acoustic interiors without synthetic binders, fibers, or added chemicals, while maintaining the compostable material lifecycle at the heart of MushLume.
The project will take us from sourcing and testing New York-grown feedstocks, through material formulation and prototyping, to third-party acoustic testing and the development of a new interior system ready for commercial application.
We’ll be sharing the process along the way: the materials, experiments, successes, failures, prototypes, testing and everything we learn as we grow this next generation of MushLume.
Thank you to New York Fashion Innovation Center for supporting our work and the continued development of sustainable textiles and biomaterials in New York.

A new chapter for MushLume.
We’re incredibly excited to share our new feature in designboom magazine exploring MushLume’s evolution from an experimental biomaterials studio into a growing Brooklyn biofabrication practice.
Twelve years after I first encountered mycelium as a design material, our new home at MADE Bush Terminal brings research, growing, production, fulfillment and experimentation together under one roof.
The feature explores our philosophy of working with nature as a partner, how we grow lighting from mycelium and h**p, and where we’re headed next as we expand into integrated acoustic lighting and architectural systems.
Thank you to Designboom, NYCEDC and MADE Bush Terminal for sharing this next chapter of our story.

What if we could grow products instead of manufacturing them?
That question led me to mushroom mycelium and ultimately to founding MushLume Lighting over 12 years ago.
Working with a living material has changed the way I think about design, manufacturing, and our relationship with nature. It’s taught me that innovation doesn’t always mean inventing something new—it can also mean learning from systems that have existed for millions of years.
In this Founder Story, I’m sharing the journey behind MushLume, what continues to inspire my work, and why I believe the future of design lies in creating with nature, not against it. — Danielle Trofe, Founder
What if lighting could do more than illuminate a room?
At MushLume, we grow lighting from mycelium—the root structure of mushrooms—to create sculptural fixtures that are beautiful, high-performing, and designed with the health of people and the planet in mind.
Every shade is grown, not manufactured, using natural materials that help reduce reliance on plastics and other resource-intensive materials. The result is lighting that brings warmth, texture, acoustic benefits, and a deeper connection to nature into the spaces we inhabit.
We believe the future of design isn’t just about making less impact—it’s about creating materials that actively contribute to a more regenerative world.
Welcome to MushLume.

Biophilic lighting design asks a simple question:
What if the light around us felt more like nature?
Instead of uniform brightness and synthetic materials, this approach brings in softness, variation, and natural texture—creating spaces that feel calmer, more connected, and more human.
At MushLume, this idea is embodied in the material itself.
Our lighting is grown from mycelium and h**p—shaping light through living systems rather than industrial processes.
Because how light is made matters just as much as how it looks.
