"Rumors of War" by @kehindewiley reimagines traditional heroic equestrian sculptures and is on our 20 Must-See St. Louis Sculptures list (🔗 www.stlouisarts.org/sculpture). It features a man on a horse, with pose and posture modeled after the statue of a Confederate general. There are, however, several significant differences. The man on this horse is Black, wears a hoodie, jeans and high-top sneakers, and has his hair in dreadlocks. Wiley’s work is meant as a direct response to Confederate monuments by reimagining a new hero and protagonist. The sculpture, purchased by the Gateway Foundation and displayed at St. Louis nonprofit @doorwayshousing, is one of nine smaller versions of a larger sculpture that Wiley made for placement in Richmond, VA. Among many creative accomplishments, Wiley is recognized for painting the official Presidential portrait of President Barack Obama (@barackobama) and exhibiting a series of large-scale oil paintings of contemporary African American subjects in poses that recall grand traditions of European and American portraiture at @stlartmuseum. #stlouisarts #stlouisartist #stlartist
