Do you know the racial attack on Isaac Woodard Jr that left him permanently blind?

26-year-old Sergeant Isaac Woodard was born on 18 March 1919, in Fairfield, South Carolina but grew up in Goldsboro, North Carolina.

On Feb. 12, 1946, he had just returned to the U.S. from fighting abroad in World War II and was on a Greyhound bus en route to his home in Winnsboro, S.C., when he asked the bus driver if he could pull into a rest stop for a bathroom break. Police officers, who met him at the next stop, brutally attacked him while still in uniform and left him permanently blind.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) took his case in the spring of 1946, pressing military officials to provide assistance to the gravely injured veteran. A benefit concert was held for him at Lewisohn Stadium in Harlem and he received a five-minute ovation from the crowd of over 20,000 when he took the stage to describe his tragic story.

After two trials, both criminal and civil, that failed to bring his perpetrator to justice and award him damages, press coverage quickly vanished. He was left to fend for himself in obscurity. Sadly, his wife, unprepared for the drastic detour in their lives, decided to leave their marriage.

This horrific incident of racial violence became a powerful catalyst for the civil rights movement.

Isaac Woodard died in the Bronx, New York on September 23, 1992. He was 73.
