Marcus Garvey was born on August 17, 1887, in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica, and went on to become one of the most influential and controversial figures in the history of Black political thought. At a time when European colonialism dominated much of Africa and racial segregation and discrimination shaped the lives of Black people across the Americas, Garvey argued that Black people needed to develop their own institutions, economic power, political consciousness and a strong sense of collective identity. His message reached far beyond Jamaica and became especially influential among Black communities in the United States, the Caribbean and Africa.

In 1914, Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League, commonly known as the UNIA. After moving to the United States in 1916, he built the organization into a mass movement, eventually attracting millions of supporters and establishing branches across different countries. Garvey promoted Black-owned businesses, education, self-reliance and the idea that people of African descent should have a central role in determining their own political and economic future. His philosophy of Pan-Africanism also emphasized Africa as the ancestral homeland of the global Black population and called for African independence from colonial rule.

Garvey's ideas were not universally accepted. His political methods, rhetoric and proposed plans for Black economic and political independence generated intense debate among other Black intellectuals and activists. He also faced serious opposition from governments, including the United States, where he was arrested and convicted of mail fraud in connection with the sale of stock in the Black Star Line. He was deported to Jamaica in 1927. Despite the controversies surrounding his career, Garvey's influence continued long after his death in 1940. His emphasis on Black pride, self-determination and African unity helped shape later generations of Pan-Africanists and Black nationalist thinkers. His legacy is therefore not simply about one man or one organization, but about a much larger question that remained central throughout the 20th century: who should control the political, economic and cultural future of Black people?
