In Southern Vietnam, the Mekong Delta is home to myriad attractive destinations and unique ecosystems that deserve more than a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City.

The River Mekong unravels into nine rivers, creating the fertile Delta as nowadays. Daily life in the delta flows with the ever-changing waters, rice fields are dug as the waters recede and fisheries thrive throughout the annual flood. Considered as the “Rice bowl” of Vietnam, Mekong Delta River brings the magic inside that appeals to all those who have come to this immense land.

The Mekong Delta is completely focused around the water, which explains why the only way to navigate this region is by boat. You will see rice paddies, fruit orchards, and floating markets, Buddhist temples and family houses clinging to the river’s banks.

The best time to travel to the Mekong Delta is from October to March, when the river water level is highest, ideal for boat markets and sailing trips. This is also when life on the river becomes the busiest. January to March offers the best weather in the whole of Vietnam.

TRONG MAI ISLET

Location: Trong Mai is situated in the southwest of Ha Long Bay, in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province, about 5km of Tuan Chau International Port. Here is one of the most well-known places on Halong Bay that tourists should visit on the way to explore one of seven wonders of the world - Ha Long Bay.

Characteristics: The islet looks like a pair of C**k & Hen in the sea.

In a somewhat large expanse of open sea, the islet seems to grow up from the bottom of the deep emerald waters. At sunset, the islet with the height of about 12m is bright red and in a somewhat tottery position.

PHONG NHA - KE BANG NATIONAL PARK (WORLD NATURAL HERITAGE)
Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park lies in Quang Binh Province - the central Viet Nam. Covering an area of more than 343,000 hectares (heart zone of 123,300ha and buffer zone of 220,000ha), Phong Nha – Ke Bang situated in Quang Ninh, Bo Trach and Minh Hoa districts, is 50km northwest of D**g Hoi City.
Phong Nha - Ke Bang can be compared to a huge geological museum thanks to its complicated geological structure with different categories of stone including sandstone, quartz, schist, siliceous limestone, granite, granodiorite, diorite, applet, pegmatite, etc. Phong Nha-Ke Bang is the oldest and largest tropical karst formed 400 million years during the main geological periods of the Earth, bearing the original topographic and geologic characteristics. Experiencing major tectonic phases, high mountain ranges and the depressed sedimentary basins were formed. These fluctuations have also contributed to the diversity of geology, topography, geomorphology.

Phong Nha - Ke Bang karst mountains can provide a lot of valuable information about the Earth's prolonged geological process through various periods, from the Ordovician Age - Silurian Age (about 463.9 - 430 million year ago) to the Quaternary Age (1.75 million years ago). It is also noteworthy to mention a geological characteristic – the system of underground rivers and grottos in limestone mountains.

Besides the historical value of geology, topography, geomorphology, Phong Nha - Ke Bang is also favoured with the mysterious and majestic landscapes by nature. The Phong Nha - Ke Bang Natural Park still hides various myths of nature. It also has spectacular karst caves formed for hundreds of millions of years.

Locating in the area with a high average rainfall, however, few rivers and streams can be seen because water is absorbed to run inside limestone mountains. Therefore over tens of million years, water has eroded rocks, creating numerous caves in the area. Phong Nha - Ke Bang area is noted for its cave and grotto systems as it is composed of 300 caves and grottos, divided into three main systems: Phong Nha Grottos, Vom Caves, and Ruc Mon Caves.

The Phong Nha grotto system is about 80km long in total, rising from south of Ke Bang Limestone Mountain. The main entrances are Khe Ry and En Grottoes situated at a height of 300m above sea level. The grottoes of this tree-branch system run in the direction of northeast-southwest.
The system of Vom caves is over 35km long, rising from Ruc Ca Roong Cave located at a height of 360m above sea level and ending with Vom Cave. The system runs south and north. Ruc Ca Roong River sometimes hides in mountains, sometimes appears in narrow and deep valleys, and flows into the Chay River at the entrance of Vom Cave.

The system of Ruc Mon caves that lies in the district of Minh Hoa is also a large cave. However, the information about this system is not abundant because few surveys have been conducted in this area so far.

Some typical caves and grottoes in Phong Nha - Ke Bang are Phong Nha, Tien Son and Thien Duong grottoes, Toi, En and Khe Ry caves. Especially, Son Doong Cave is considered as the largest cave in the world with 200m in height, 200m in width, at least 8.5km in length.

With its characteristics of topography, climate, soil and hydrography, Phong Nha - Ke Bang boasts a rich, diversified and unique flora. Investigations show that Phong Nha - Ke Bang has a large tropical forest floor. It covers 93.57 percent of the natural area, of which nearly 83.74 percent is covered by primeval forests. The diversity of rare and precious species of animals and plants in Phong Nha - Ke Bang is corollary of its natural conditions, and is a feature of the forest ecosystem.

- Bai Dinh Pagoda -
Bai Dinh Pagoda is a famous spiritual scenic complex in the Bai Dinh – Trang An ecotourism spot with a history of more than 1000 years associated with the land of many feudal dynasties from the Dinh, the Early Le to the Ly. Considered as the largest complex of Buddhist pagodas in Vietnam as well as owner to many other records of country, South East Asia and Asia, this is definitely an indispensable destination in your handbook where to go.

The name of Bai Dinh Pagoda has the meaning of heading to Dinh Mountain, where the majestic events in Vietnamese history took place such as King Dinh Tien Hoang De set up the altar to pray for good weather; or later, King Quang Trung chose as a flag ceremony to encourage soldiers before going to Thang Long to destroy the Qing army. In the 16th century, Dinh Mountain was the disputed area between the two feudal groups Le – Trinh and the Mac dynasty, when the Mac government only controlled the territory from Ninh Binh backwards. During the resistance war, Bai Dinh was also a revolutionary relic of the Quynh Luu war zone, where the leaders of the Communist Party of Vietnam propagated the revolution to the people.

As a complex of pagodas, today’s Bai Dinh Pagoda includes the ancient pagoda and new pagoda built in 2003.
The ancient Bai Dinh Pagoda is now located about 800m south of Tam The Hall of the new pagoda. Up to 300-step stairway access, this quiet shrine houses a main prayer hall and natural caves, where locals pray to Buddha and mountain spirits such as Genie Cao Son and Saint Nguyen. In 1997, the ancient pagoda was recognized as a national historical – cultural – revolutionary relic.

Together with the ancient pagoda, the new architecture is majestic, massive but still deeply traditional, and was honored by media as the largest complex in South East Asia. This new place soon became a famous destination attracting many visitors, even under construction.

This sacred complex will impress any visitors from the first sight with its majestic, magnificent architecture and unique scenery.
Your visit will start from the new Bai Dinh Pagoda which encompasses an area of 80 hectares, located on Ba Rau hills, near the Hoang Long River. This is a large complex which includes many structures built in several phases starting in 2003 and finally completed in 2010, by 500 artisans from many traditional villages nationwide.

From January to March of lunar calendar, with the warm spring weather, this is the best time to visit the complex. You can combine sightseeing tours, pagodas praying ceremony or participate in major festivals in the region. However, this is also the peak festival tourist season, so there will be in very crowded conditions. Otherwise, you can also visit Bai Dinh pagoda at other times of the year to avoid the hustle and bustle scenes.

- One Pillar Pagoda: Hanoi's Iconic Landmark Not To Be Missed-

One Pillar Pagoda (officially known as Dien Huu Pagoda), is named after its extraordinary architecture: The whole construction is built on a single pillar, which is planted in the middle of a lotus pond. The attraction is located in Ba Dinh District, which is very walkable to Ho Chi Minh Complex, including Ba Dinh Square, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and Ho Chi Minh Museum. The One Pillar Pagoda is believed to exist since the Ly’s dynasty, marking a notable development of Buddhism in Vietnam. This monument is not only a famous tourist attraction but also a religious stop for local pilgrims.

1. Tale & History
According to research, the temple was built under the Ly’s Dynasty, by Emperor Ly Thai Tong between the years of 1028 and 1054. Legend tells that Emperor Ly Thai Tong once dreamt of Quan Am Bo Tat, a female Buddhist goddess, took him to sit on a lotus. After interpreting this story to the master monk Thien Tue, the Emperor decided to build a sanctuary resembling the shape of lotus flower. In the belief of Confucianism and Buddhism, lotus is a symbol of purity, fortune and enlightenment as it blooms and spreads its fragrance despite rooting from a muddy environment. One Pillar Pagoda is considered the Emperor’s great gratitude toward Quan Am Bo Tat.
It wasn’t until 1954 that One Pillar Pagoda was destroyed at the end of the French colonization of Vietnam. The building was totally damaged, remaining solely a stone pillar. One year later, in 1955, One Pillar Pagoda was recreated by the government and it has been under continuous preservation until the present.

2. Beauty and structure
One Pillar Pagoda is an architectural complex consisting of different individuals intermingled within the campus. The temple, named Lien Hoa Dai, was settled on a single stone pillar. Eight wooden beams represent 8 flower petals carrying the main building. Reaching the perfection, all joints extremely fit together, creating an incredibly solid architecture. To reach Lien Hoa Dai, there’s a brick stairway including 13 steps that connect the temple with the lakefront.

The inner altar is decorated solemnly with a golden statue of Quan Am Bo Tat and other worshiping objects such as copper censer, ceramic vases, and gold-plated lotuses.
There is a Bodhi tree within the complex, which was presented by President of India Rajendra Prasad during President Ho Chi Minh's visit to India in February 1958, marking great development in Vietnam – India relationship. Bodhi tree is a symbol of wisdom, tolerance of Buddhism.

FANSIPAN - THE ROOF OF INDOCHINA

Location: Fansipan Mountain is located 9km south-west of Sa Pa Townlet in the Hoang Lien Mountain Range.

Characteristics: With the altitude of 3,143m, Fansipan Mount is the highest mount in Indochina and known as the “Roof of Indochina”. Conquering Fansipan Peak is always a longing for those who love nature and exploring new things.

◊ Topography
The topography of Fansipan is varied. Muong Hoa Valley, at the lowest altitude (950-1,000m), is created by a narrow strip of land at the base on the east side of the mountain.

Geologists say the Hoang Lien Mountain Range, with Fansipan as its highest peak, did not emerge in the mountainous North West of Viet Nam until the neozoic period (circ. 100 million years ago). Fansipan, a rough pronunciation of the local name "Hua Xi Pan" means "the tottery giant rock". The French came to Viet Nam and in 1905 planted a landmark telling Fansipan's height of 3,143m and branded it "the Roof of Indochina". Very few people climbed to the top of Fansipan at the time. Then came the long years of war and Fansipan was left deserted for hunting and savaging. The trail blazed by the French was quickly overgrown by the underbrush.

◊ Conquering Fansipan Mount by Cable Car

Since 2 February 2016 with the appearance of Fansipan cable car, visitors only take 30 minutes to reach the “Roof of Indochina”, instead of 2-3 days as before. It also makes the dream of conquering the “Roof of Indochina” of numerous visitors come true.

Being the three-rope cable car with the length of 6,292.5m, the Fansipan cable car system consists of 33 cabins with a capacity of 2,000 people per hour. Each cabin can carry from 30 to 35 people. This cable car system is able to withstand the strong winds and severe weather conditions to ensure obsolutely safety for visitors.

The auxiliary works such as departure station, terminal station, restaurant, souvenir shop, etc are elaborately designed with architectural features and decorative details inspired from brocade patterns of Northwest ethnic people. All create the architectural complex in harmony combination with nature.

From Sa Pa Town, according to National Road 4D about 2.5km, visitors arrive in Sa Pa Cable Car Station.

Experience of cable car brings visitors unforgotten feelings. From cabin, visitors can see the poetic town of Sa Pa with Western style houses hidden under clouds.

◊ The Best Time to Conquer Fansipan Mount

The summit of Fansipan is accessible all year round, but the best time to make the ascent is from mid-October to mid-November, and again in March.

However, the best time for conquering the mountain is from the end of February to the start of March, when the flowers all flourish and the climbers may behold the carpets of brilliant blossoms, violets and orchids, rhododendrons and aglaias.
