"My greatest fear in life is finding myself in a situation where I am the center of attention and left entirely vulnerable to outside criticism. This would explain why when my homeroom teacher offered me a chance to join a school-held pageant called “Miss Newton”, I turned it down on the spot. Especially considering that I’m in my senior year of high school, I wanted to avoid as much pressure and stress as possible. But after some persuasion by my family, and myself realizing that this was a once-in-a-lifetime moment, I would have regretted it had I not given it a shot.

After some time, I managed to make it to the Finals, and at that point, it felt like there was almost too much to prepare. Whenever I was home, all of my free time would be focused entirely on practicing my dance routine until every movement became a part of me. In fact, I can still recall the evenings when my parents and my sister helped me travel from store to store to try on and pick up stage outfits and props. The entire journey was tiring yet exhilarating, and in a strangely euphoric way, it made me feel much more special than ever.

As the Finals loomed, there was even more pressure. I can’t put into words how nervous, worried, excited, and proud I was of myself at the same time. Much to my delight, I hardly received any harsh criticism for my showcase; love and support poured in from my friends and family, which empowered me strongly for the next part. Entering the interview, my heart was pounding - the room was silent, I was the only one with the microphone, and all eyes and ears were on me. Through it all, I answered my questions with all the poise and composure I had, and at the end, I finished in 2nd place.

I remember reading this quote from Marissa Mayer - the former CEO of Yahoo - “When there’s that moment of ‘Wow, I’m not sure I can do this’, and you push through those moments, that’s when you have a breakthrough.” Looking back, I relate to this quote so much because throughout that journey, I was not ready either! But without that experience, I would not have realized what I had in me, and that each challenge in that journey only pushed me further from my comfort zone and helped me thrive into a bigger, better person. With that, I now move forward in life with the view that daring to do things that you are a little uncomfortable with will help you grow step by step!"
